Went through some reading this weekend and you're correct. If you don't see the option for Sidewalk in the Alexa app your device is too old to use the service.

Thanks for the heads up. I was trying to disable this feature and found all of the recordings of every command (or what the device perceived as one) I’ve ever spoken to an Amazon device… SCREW that! I threw the 4 echos I had away and cancelled my Prime membership today.
