Did I Undertip the Pizza Man? I Guess Times Have Changed

I just ordered my first pizza in a while, apparently. I tried to call the store and they asked me to hang up and download and order through the app. No worries, the app was interactive and easy. I order my food and tip $5 on the app because there’s the option, but I always like to tip cash as well in any situation.
The driver arrives on time and we exchange a friendly banter for at least 2 minutes. He hands me the pizza and I hand him a 5’er. He rolls it in his hand in disgust as he looks up at me and completely changed his tone. I get the immediate impression I’m about 10 years behind and he’s somehow offended.
How much do you tip your pizza man? It’s a pizza, not a blowjob.

So he got a $10 tip for a $12 pizza?

frick him. $5 is good enough. I'm not the only one he's dropping off at a time, guaranteed, and he's already making at least minimum wage.

What special skills are involved in delivering pizza? How long did it take to get your food?

$5 is more than enough for a pizza delivery

Happened to me the other night when I picked up food at a restaurant. I don't tip anything because nobody is providing me table service. But, like yourself, the girl checking me out changed her tone towards me. frick that and frick tipping unless it's delivered or table service

If I tipped $5 on the app then I'm not giving the driver shite when they arrive.

"tip"?? for what, doing his JOB that he agreed to accept?
I tip based on someone exceeding what's expected of them not for meeting the minimum threshold.

I had a waitress get mad at me when I gave a $5 tip on a $17 bill from Steak and shake. That’s almost a 30% tip. I don’t know what some people expect.

Screw that. I waited tables and delivered food in college. I never really felt tips for delivery were dependent on order value unless it was just a huge quantity order.
When waiting tables, a higher bill most likely meant a little more attention and service. Delivery is the same drive and drop off no matter what, plus you get a much higher turnover. If I got 2 bucks, I was fine and getting stiffed sucked, but wasn't as bad as when waiting tables.

You tipped at a burger joint. You're nicer than I am.

At many restaurants, the people in charge of to-go are relying on tips just like waitresses are, and they’re tasked with putting together the order, verifying it’s correct, making any side salads, gathering condiments, bagging it, etc.
Often times it’s the bartender who is tasked with all that. So they have to walk away from their nearly guaranteed income to take several minutes to put those orders together.
I don’t think it’s necessary to tip 20% for to-go orders, obviously, but tipping something should be a no brainer, because they’re providing a service and mostly aren’t getting paid for their effort by the establishment.
As a former bartender who was tasked with and dealt with all of the above, I would encourage you to consider 10% or so. That’s the accepted “norm.”

I've heard from people who have worked at restaurants that there is a tip expectation involved in pick up. I have always felt as you do

You tip at a fast food restaurant? No wonder society is broken.

I tip a few dollars for takeout but not like dine in service. Maybe 10%.

This question isn’t specific to pizza delivery, but at restaurants - what would you consider the minimum threshold of quality expected of someone being paid $2.13 per hour?

He can get in line. Pizza is a service that may be a bit undervalued, but plenty of others can take his place.

How much do they want to get tipped?
