Most people logically do 20 + 20 = 40 , then 7 + 3 = 10 , which gives 40 + 10 = 50.

Now some smart arse is gonna say NO NO NO I just add 27 and 23! I will challenge you to catch yourself doing exactly what I just showed at some point in the next week.

I don't do it that way. I do 7+3=10, carry the 1, 2+2+1=5, answer 50. At least that's the way I'd do it if I didn't just add 27+23

I have no issue with common core though. As long as my kid can get 50 quickly with whatever technique is taught, I don't really care.

That's how I've always done it, and it's not the way I was taught. It was just the easiest way I realized to do it.

How is one method more logical than the other? Doing the "carry the ones" method may be a bit counter intuitive because it goes from right to left rather than left to right, but they seem like pretty similar approaches. I think the "carry the one" method scales better though.

Quick, add 256145690 and 8438. That's why going from right to left is handy.

Touch points are a form of adding. Each number is given its numerical value in "touch points". So for the letter 3, you touch the 3 tips and that reminds you of the value of 3.

Holy shite
