A good therapist could have gotten you there, and you wouldn't be paying to settle sex abuse scandals.

Therapy success rates for curing depression and improving life outcomes are actually relatively low generally speaking.

The real benefit in situations like this is a church community immerses you into a friend group that doesn't do the activities you used to do with your old friend group. The same concept applies to those crossfit people. If you are trying to turn your life around there's no better way than to start hanging out with people who aren't fricking up and it's hard to make friends the older you get. Church, crossfit, and even AA communities throw you into a friend group of people trying to be better.

Good job climbing out the gutter! Keep it up!

The closer we get to Him

How is this done? I’m not grasping the concept so far.

Prayer
Sitting in silence listening to Him
Church (worship)
Morning and evening devotionals
Reading the Bible
Serving others
Podcasts
Faith-based movies

This is said a lot but what could happen that would cause you to consider God “bad”?

I think many people who suffer heartache don’t necessarily label God “bad,” they just stop believing in Him altogether.

Yes. The church brought me back to Jesus and my life got better quickly, not slowly because I believed in the power of prayer and Jesus answered my prayers.
