I was a witness in an investigation where this was the case. An acquaintance shot a friend “accidentally”. The initial charge was 1st degree murder, which it was. There were 3 witnesses within ten feet of the shooting. After interviewing all the witnesses, the DA offered a deal for negligent homicide which was accepted. Dude was out in less than 5 years. It was complete bullshite.

It was racist driven. They pumped up the white stories because they figured it would get more interest. Black males make up 7% of the population, but commit 20% of serial homicides.

Maybe not, but that is what Mary Ann Fowler's son said he was told by a LEO. I think they can now, but tech was different in the early 2000's.
The same info from the towers back then, with today's software and algorithms applied would be damned interesting.
