struggled with depression for many years then I quit drinking
I've noticed this over the past couple of months. I used to be a daily drinker. I drank Friday and was with friends and was fine. I drank Saturday during the game and then was alone and the demons came out to play. Its like a switch got flipped....I'm now reluctant to drink because I know how it's going to make me feel

Could be other things.
I was pretty fricked up a year or so ago. Sleeping a lot, no energy, not taking care of myself, etc.
Turns out I had severe sleep apnea and hadn’t had real sleep in years. Got a CPAP about a year ago and I feel like I’m 17 again. I’m back in shape, more productive at work, and much more active in the sack. The fog has lifted for me.

t is very likely that for most people, not all, that there is legitimately something wrong in their lives that needs to be addressed whether it’s a bad relationship, financial hardship, addiction (which usually results from self-medicating to treat depression), spiritual deficit, feeling useless, death of a loved one, guilt over past actions/inaction, etc. you have to figure out what is eating you and address it for your depression to go away.
This is a good summation, although I am no expert on depression. Most people avoid going within because it is easier to drink or use to escape the unpleasant feelings we have. This just creates more problems instead of solving any.
I have noticed that non-spiritual people are eaten alive by negativity, anger, and hopelessness.

That's a pretty broad stroke you're painting. Some of the most unhappy people I know are really spiritual.

I have never taken the time to even think about depression. However, my kids are getting older and I only have a couple of years left before we are empty nesters, and I have been running my own business now for almost 20 years doing the same thing, I have fallen into a very deep rut. I have no purpose and can’t seem to find one.
There are now many long dark days in my life with no excitement or energy. Problems that would have been mere speed bumps in my life 10 years ago turn into walls that I obsess and lose sleep over.
I broke down and started seeing a therapist recently and no help yet. I don’t want to do meds yet. I have started exercising more, eating better, and cut way down on the booze. No help yet but I guess I am at least trying different things.
Looking at my life from someone else’s eyes I should be happier than I have ever been, but it is the exact opposite and every day seems to get worse.

MJC,
I meant to post this the other day for your thread but got sidetracked. I think a lot of depression today stems from lack of proper nutrition. The average American's diet is shite and our food isn't as nutritious as it should be. I am speaking from experience from what helped me a lot over the past few years FWIW. I was in a bad place after my dad passed. I improved my diet and exercise and it changed my outlook on things. Overall I am in a much better place.
Kelvin, it’s good to hear from you bruh. And I feel everything you said. You’re absolutely on the right track, but the problem is that you worked hard at it and made long term life changes, and people rarely wanna do this the right way. It’s all about the easy, medicinal way out. I can tell you I used to wake up and hate my life, but go for a brisk 4-5 mile run and my mood was excellent all day. Working out always has that affect and increases endorphins. I could def make some major changes to my diet, but my body is so beat up and broken these days, it’s hard to aim for the level of fitness where I once was (because my life depended on it).... but I’ve tried DDP yoga and I still do a walk/run for about 6 Miles a few days a week which def relieves stress and less depression is a biproduct. But I know something is wrong with me. I’m self aware enough to not let it overtake me. Im willing to try anything to dodge the crippling darkness that creeps in. I’m sure a diet change would do me a shite ton of good, and it certainly can’t hurt. My thing is, I have to almost keep a lid on my depression because I feel guilty for feeling this way because I’m incredibly blessed and I don’t want my wife feeling like things are her fault etc. Anyway, glad you’re winning the battle the right way

I believe a lot of my self-loathing is the result of feeling guilty that I somehow “wasted” my gifts and talents. If I succeed in my plan to get back into physical shape, trumpet playing shape, and pass the bar, I will have achieved everything educationally I had hoped to achieve and would have beaten the physical insecurities I’ve had since middle school. The recent dating success has really helped at keeping the self-loathing more manageable.
I know I’ll always want a little more, and that’s not a bad thing, but I think getting to that point would get me a lot further in the right direction.
