I don't know why any responsible parent would allow their child to be on social media. If they want to sign up when they are in college, fine. But pre teens to teenagers have no business being on it.

The Coddling of the American Mind gets into this a bit. Jonathan Haidt deserves serious attention for the work he's done in social psychology. Greg Lukianoff deserves more praise for giving voice to those kids who feel shut out.

Scruffy believes that social media (Facebook, Twitter, IG, etc.) is the worst invention since the atomic bomb and is detrimental to society as a whole.

Its a lot more involved, the algorithms and games trigger the brain like drugs or gambling - these sort of addictive brain impulses lead to changes in the way the brain chemistry works. Couple that with the decrease in community activity, decreasing since of connection and purpose and you start to get these negative results.
There is a reason the people most concerned with technology and its impact on kids are in silicon valley.
