the wind at the center of the storm is essentially 0
so the radar equipment guides them and they find the point in the eye where the winds are the calmest

Flight level winds help. They fly quite low, relatively speaking, so even without a well defined eye, they know when the shite stops hitting the fan.

Wind speeds drop to about zero and they have an on board radar and a really good Met on board. Sometimes they miss by a little bit but that's why they do drops into the middle to confirm.
