It was an unspent round from a semiautomatic handgun. It is reportedly the ejection markings. I do not know nearly enough about this subject to even speculate. However, from what I have read specifically related to this case it is not a definite science.
Generally speaking, in a case like this the examiner(s) can say the suspect's gun is capable of creating the characteristics seen on the ejected round vs. many other guns that produce different defining characteristics on an ejected round. What they cannot say is whether the suspect's gun is the one and only gun that could produce those characteristics.

He said hair found entwined in Abby's fingers had a root with DNA. The DNA seemed to possibly match a female relative of Libby, and not Allen.
This is nothing. It was likely already on clothes and got on hand while forced to disrobe or putting on Libby’s clothes. I doubt the prosecution was going to focus on this hair during trial. For defense to bring this up only makes sense if they are going to blame a member of that family. That only makes sense if they have some actual proof or it will backfire on them big time.
EDIT: maybe use to imply their theory on body being moved.

I hate to say this but just reading this stuff, the case against him seems very weak.

Not only to the police, but he confessed to family members as well right? Police coercion can be believed but why voluntarily confess to other ppl?

Any firearm experts feel free to weigh in.
I don't remember the source (surely a podcast), but I recall someone mentioning that ejection markings have never been used in court as evidence.

Supposedly some of his confessions had completely inaccurate information.

quote:Yes. The local "news"paper is a Gannett rag that is completely useless. Bangert (and his wife, I believe) were pretty much among the last remaining professionals on the paper. Gannett laid off a bunch of people, bought out Bangert, and basically flushed the Journal and Courier down the shitter entirely about 3 years ago.
This blogger seems unbiased. It’s Lafayette, INDIANA by the way.
Bangert has always been an absolutely solid, professional reporter and writer, and has a LOT of local subscribers to his substack.

If the unspent round absolutely matches his gun, how can anyone question this?
Ejector marks from mass-produced pistols seems a little sketchy to me. What does "absolutely matches" mean, and who's paying the 'expert' who says so?

Ty for doing such a great job updating this.

It means they look at it under a microscope and compare.

A lab, depends on the jurisdiction, could be local or they could send it all it out. If it's used in a trial the examiner will testify.
I don't know about a round that hasn't been fired, I'm little skeptical as well but I can ask some people that know 100%.
With a fired casing/bullet it's different, there are way more data points to make a determination that it was 100% fired from a specific gun.

This is a blog (obviously not live because of no electronics in courtroom) but posted in reverse sequential order like a live blog, from WISHNews8. This recaps all of today’s court proceedings.
ETA: Testimony will resume from 9am-12noon tomorrow, Saturday 10/19/24.

Yes, the judge wants to go 6 days/week since jury is sequestered, or at least 5-1/2 days I guess.

For years Internet rumors persisted about the girls being posed like dolls or even a doll being present at the scene. I can totally see someone taking this guy’s description out of context and giving rise to those rumor.
Also what initially drew the eyes of this man and the lady who was searching with him was a deer very close to the crime scene, and then they realized they had found the girls. At least I read a credible account that said this.
