How long does it normally take to get a death certificate? It's sort of a big deal if you try to handle any bills for the person who passed away.

First, you have to wait until the person is dead. Second, it shouldn't take long at all

Unless you're direct kin or parent you won't be able to order it yourself.

I'm the admin of the estate. Louisiana law says it has to be signed within 24 hours or it's a crime. You pay for it at the funeral home. It's been a month and the funeral home says it hasn't been signed by the doctor.

A couple of days. Bunch of people on here have obviously never gotten one. Two months? As if the Estate is going to sit for that long.

Well that's a very big piece of useful info.

I would start with the hospital, then go to HHS after. As a last resort you try the clerk of court.

I haven't been thru this myself, but from what I understand, you need many death certificates. Any accounts or banking you try to do for the deceased will require an original and not a copy.

Contact your coroner's office.

Death certificates have to be filed electronically and I think most coroner's offices can access them.

If by handling bills you mean waving a death certificate to get out of paying them, that doesn't work. The executor of the estate is still responsible for settling all debts and even for filing income tax returns for the year of death.
