MIL passed recently, wife was executor of her will instead of her step father. We had the death certificates a week after she passed.
If you're worried about bills, don't be they aren't going anywhere, and you'll get it sorted. Take your time grieving, my wife was calling companies the day after we got there. Mature on her part but it wasn't nescesarly the time to do it.
As weird as it sounds a lot of companies don't even require death certificates to close accounts, you call them, they take notes and see if they want to pursue it. In our situation my MIL didn't have an estate. So reason why they didn't care. That all depends on the state the person resided in though and each state is different.
