Saw a couple on tv looking at tiny houses with a realtor and every house the woman would bitch because the bedroom was too small for a king bed...

I own a 550 sq foot house in SF. BUT, i have a 550 sq foot walk-out basement where I can store my shite and do laundry.
I don't know how these people live in 250 sq feet.

I don't care about the tiny homes thing so much if it weren't for the fact that they are doing it with the pretense of being seen. Just live in your tiny house if that's what you want to do and shut up.

Exactly. We actually have 2 small houses. One is my 200 sq foot woodframe house that I bought for $1200 and fixed up to suit me. I lived in it when I was single and loved it. It had been built by its original owners to be a portable camp and contains a cute kitchen and a bathroom with shower.
But now that I am married we live in a small but lovely cottage of about 600 sq ft. We got the cottage for an amazing price from neighbors because it had to be moved. Paid cash, No mortgage.
And we live surrounded by hundreds of acres without anyone around for miles. We have a small bayou on the property, a few ponds ( a few gators too). It is not uncommon to see deer on our property or to hear the coyotes as they run to the river.
No mortgage, no annoying neighbors, no HOA, no city codes, no car thieves (the vehicles are parked in the yard with the keys inside at all times), no one to annoy us.
It is our own gated community where 4 generations (in 3 different houses) all live on the same land but far enough apart that we cant see each other at all.
Our bills are way less than $1000 a month for everything including food and gas. Our life isn't for everyone but for us it is pretty dang sweet.
My next project? My rockgarden and mini beach/bayou behind my tiny house (the 200 sq ft one).
If I get annoyed with my husband in our small cottage, I can go to my tiny house and do as I please in total comfort.

Oh and those tiny houses that costs as much as a tiny house are ridiculous and something hipsters and posers buy.
True tiny houses are about living a less expensive life so that you can put excess money into college or other pursuit such as saving money for other dreams.
Tiny houses are for also for people who ay not have a lot of money so they prefer to live a frugal life.
It's a choice made from a lot of thinking and planning or even necessity, not just some hipster symbol of how hip they are for having a tricked out small house for some astronomical price.
Some people want a small house because they want a home they can afford that no one can take away from them. Look at all the foreclosures and people losing houses and being underwater or even being homeless.
Some people just want the security of a tiny home that can never be taken by a mortgage company.

Author tried too hard. 250 ft2 can be done but is smaller than I'd ever want to live full time. I've spent two summers living in a VW camper as my wife and I drove all over the west. Our living area was around 100 ft2. We got used to it somewhat but would get a hotel for a night every week or two; for a decent bed and hot shower. After our trips we'd agree we have way too much stuff and can live with a lot less house.
We're building a house now on some land we love. Going to go from 2,600 ft2 in our current house to 1,600 ft2 in the new house. I wouldn't want to go smaller full time. We're also upgrading the VW camper to a truck camper and doubling the living area when we travel - with a queen bed and hot shower.
