I thought it was a moving year for age 40

Still, the point stands. The majority of boaters in Louisiana currently do not need any license/certificate at all

Wut?

https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/boater-education

quote:

We encourage every boater to take a boater education course. However, if you were born after January 1, 1984, you must successfully complete an LDWF-approved boater education course to operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower, unless you are accompanied by someone over age 18 who has a successfully completed an LDWF-approved boater education course, if required.

In addition, if you were born after January 1, 1984, you must successfully complete an approved boater education course to operate a personal watercraft. You must also be age 16 or older to operate a personal watercraft.

Individuals must carry their certification of course completion while on the motorboat or personal watercraft.

If you are a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, you are not required to take this course to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft.

Youth younger than age 10 may take a boater education course but are not eligible to be certified. They must retake the course to be certified when they reach 10 years of age or older.

Plenty of people it’s required for. 16-40 is a huge percentage of boat pilots.

So the state carved out exemptions to the license, making it less effective.

Does that change the definition of license?

The license is a complete joke. But it is a license.

It is not a license, a certificate of completion of the boater safety course.

In fact, the statute itself distinguishes a license and the certificate of completion which tells you it isn’t a license. A person who is licensed as a Captain by the USCG is not required to complete the safety course.

This is straight from WL&F

People born after 1983 are required to have taken boater’s safety and carry their certification to operate a small recreational vessel.

Stop being an idiot.

A certificate that is required to operate something.

Please see the definition of “license” on the previous page for a refresher on the English language.

Why do you think they choose not to call it a Louisiana boaters license?

I’m the lawyer between the two of us so I don’t think that’s necessary

Jesus this went off the rails.

On a side note, never knew this exception until I looked it up just now.

States with mandatory boating law require safety certification for some or all boaters. Only one state (Alabama) requires an actual boat license. However, many prospective students are not aware of state legal terminology, and search for information about a boat license or licence, or a captain or captains license. This page is an excellent resource for boating law for all fifty states.

Right. Really a license when you point blank do not need it at all to drive a boat in multiple scenarios

This always gets people on Pickwick Lake when they don't realize they've left TN or MS and are in AL.

If he isn’t in jail the rest of his life. They need to revoke his boaters certificate.

He sank a boat a month ago. And now done tried killing 13 people and sinking his boat and taking out another.

This type of person should never be allowed to own a boat nor drive one

Wont matter. Not having a boaters certificate does not make it illegal to operate a boat in Louisiana in terms of any actual legal harm to the offending party. You can only be fined. You can’t be arrested or charged for not having it. Which is a major issue for it having any teeth at all
