Gillett Fat Boy Adjustable (mine is from 1958) - Best Razor
Feather - Best Blades
TrueFit and Hill - Best Creams / after shaves
Omega - makes a good all around brush
If you want something to get you started off right, then this is what I suggest
Edwin Jagger DE89BL - Razor
Astra Platinum Blades
Paraso or Taylor of Old Bond Street - Creams and Aftershaves
Omega - Brush has very good brushes in the 15-25 dollar range.
You can also go old school on the after shaves with things like Brut and Old spice.

I started with EJ DE89 - that's a good starting place. I now use a Merkur long-handled, it is my preferred instrument.
My favorite blades are: Feather, Astra Platinum & Wilkinson Sword classic - probably in that order. I have tried a ton of them.
I use a Simpson Colonel brush and Taylor of Old Bond Street Eton College or Jermyn Street (I buy the 5.3 oz plastic jar).
For after shave, I use Pre de Provence no. 63 or L'Occitan Cade - both are balms.
Pay attention to the process, Rome was not built in a day.

As a starter, I'd go with the EJ 89. The reason is that it's a three piece. That means you can change the handle out. Which is important once you get better.
I've 4 razors, use all kinds of blades and soaps and creams.
You will have to find the combination that works for you.
Tonight I used:
An Omega boar brush
Dr. Jon's Savannah Sunrise soap
A 1967 Gillette Slim adjustable
Astra Platinum Blades
A Marvey Green shave cup
Razo Rock Alum Block
It was amazing.
Echt Wasser 4711 aftershave and with a touch of Roberts Borotalco talc for the finish.
Amazing feel and smell.

How bad are the nicks when starting DE shaving?
Not bad at all if you have a feel for it.
My wife uses my DE for everything.
I hought 100 derby blades for my merkur 6 years ago, I'm almost done with them.
I keep a beard, so the razor is used for the kneck and tightening the lines of the beard.
I could never go back to the new style. I shaved a full head of hair completely off the other day using only my DE raxor and some barbasol. Try that with a mach 3.

Just getting started into this
Right now I'm using:
Edwin Jagger DE89 safety razor w/ persona blades
Van der Hagen Boar hair brush
Van der Hagen Shave soap
Trader Joes post shave balm
If you are just starting I'd recommend the Trader Joes shaving set and Van der Hagen shave set. I think the Trader Joes one is $10 and the Van der Hagen one is $20 at Walmart. That comes with a brush, bowl, soap, and stand.
I really do love it. Its takes longer but it is much more enjoyable once you get past the learning stages with a few nicks. Once you get a feel for how to shave with it you won't go back. And you'll actually save money in the long run on razors

I have a few brushes, bowls, and every sent of Taylor of Old Bond.
They usually sit idle while I shave with barbasol.

I've been meaning to buy some Taylor of Old Bond soap, but I still have a good bit left of my other stuff right now and just don't find it necessary to buy even more soap. Maybe now that I'm graduating I'll start experimenting more once I have the income to blow on shaving supplies.
And to OP - if you want to learn more, follow Nick Shaves on youtube. He has some great introductory videos teaching how to shave and what products you need and does a lot of review videos with different shaving products

Put a small amount of bourbon in a spray bottle, shave with their sandlewood. A spritz with the bourbon as an aftershave and women go crazy.
I actually soak cinnamon sticks, cloves, and tobacco in bourbon, strain it, and use it for cologne sometimes and always as an aftershave.

There are a lot of choices. A setup that works perfectly for one, may be hell for another.
As far as blades, I'd recommend getting a sample pack off Amazon and see what you like.
My preferences:
Merkur 23C razor
Feather or Astra blades
Proraso Greeen tube (or the maroon Sandalwood) for shaving cream.
Kiehl's Facial Fuel Tonic for a splash after.
Jack Black Post Shave Cooling Gel or...
If you want to use a scented aftershave with alcohol for a little antiseptic burn, cut it with a dash of 91% isopropyl alcohol and unscented witch hazel.

I'm a big Taylor of Bond Street fan. The sandalwood is awesome. The creams they rule. (Eton College fan)
Their soaps, other than Sandal, suck for scent.
For lime (which is pretty hard to do) I like Captain's Choice, Soap Commander or Geo Trumpers.

Lots of guys saying to go with the Merkur razor. I had the long handle one and the post came out of the head of the razor. It is broken. I have a Merkur adjustable and find it too big and heavy.
So I found an old Gillette TTO (twist to open) from the 1950's or 60's in my dad's stuff after he died and I love that razor! It is small and easy to use.
CO Bigelow shaving cream or
Mitchell's Wool Fat shaving soap
Crystal blades for me. Feathers are really sharp.

I shave my head twice a week; I use a Braun 7 Series first & then Gillette for sensitive skin with the Gillette Mach 3

I don't know if it is the best but this is what I use.
Merkur Long Handle
Bic Platinum Blades
Barbasol
Lucky Tiger Aftershave/Face Tonic

My favorite two soaps and creams are Castle Forbes and Czeck and Speake Oxford and Cambridge
Favorite aftershave is a recent discovery... Mr. Fine, which is sold on Amazon and has several different scents.
Feather blades.
From a technique standpoint, if you're nicking yourself and getting razor burn, try taking short little ticks with the blade instead of long strokes. It's not meant to be used like a multi blade. Think about how a barber uses a straight razor. That's how you should use a safety razor.

That poor fella died by the way.
How's he gonna gloss his third form without finding the buttress?

I use a Merkur razor with derby blades. Badger hair brush. Soaps include Taylor of Old Bond Street, Proraso and I found some soap with caffeine in it at target. Thought I'd give it a try and works surprisingly well.

Best razor, blades, soap/cream, aftershave, and etc.?
Razor? Vintage. Too many to mention, but Greta starter is a 1940's Super Speed. They are cheap and all over eBay. It is indestructible and will outlive your children if not soaked in bleach.
Soap/cream. Taylor of Olde Bond Street. Great products and at a starter price.
Blades. Gillette yellows were mentioned. Feathers are great also but super sharp. Get a few shave into it before trying feathers. They can leave your face raw.
Aftershave. I am hooked on Ogallala Bay sandalwood/bay rum. Also Jack Black makes a post shave "cooling gel". It does not burn. It stops the burn. It is awesome. You could shave with a steak knife and this gel would take the burn away.

I need a new brush. I bought a new one from Art of Shaving a few months ago for like 60 bucks and the thing sheds badger hair onto my face everyone I apply the soap.
Any recommendations?

I've had one for a year and a half. It. Loses a hair a week or so.
