We are planning to drive to Yosemite tomorrow from San Francisco for a day trip. We want to leave early in the morning and return by night time.

What are some must see things we can check out during the 6-7 hours we have there? We want to hit the highlights and take some good pictures...don't plan to hike or anything.

That is a very quick turn around with 3.5 hrs each way. You want to see the Bridal veil falls (I think that's the name) and El Cap. Have lunch at the lodge as well.

Oh ... And the redwoods - a must.

Redwoods are in Muir Woods up in Marin.

You mean the Sequoias? They are incredible too.

You must go to Glacier Point. It may take up your entire trip time for a day trip from SF, but Glacier Point is the place you must see.

From SF you may enter the Northwest entrance so you will miss the valley on the road to Glacier Point.

If you have time on the way back from Glacier Point, swing through the valley to see El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

But Glacier Point is the must-see. May well be the most beautiful spot on earth.

No way to do it. We made the trip from Tahoe, and there's just not enough time to see everything. Not to mention the shite load of people that will be there.

That just seems like too much driving (even without a certain clusterF of traffic) for such a short period of time. It's pretty and all, but if you really want to see it, you need to get out of the car and dig in.

The bay area has so much to see within an hour of SF. I'd stick to that.

It's only about 190 miles from SF to Yosemite (Big Oak Flat Entrance Station?), but it's a 3-1/2 or 4 hr drive.

Glacier Point is spectacular and has beautiful views of the valley. From Glacier Point into the valley is about a 45 minute drive (w/o traffic). Once in the valley, you have views of Yosemite Falls, El Capitain, Half Dome and the Merced River.

If traffic is a mess in the valley, you might want to drive east on Tioga Rd toward Lee Vining (...if the roaf is open yet. I don't know how heavy the Sierra snows were this winter and sone years it doesnt get cleared until June.) Plenty of lakes, views, Tuouleme(sp?) Meadows, Tioga Pass, etc. Very scenic.

One day isn't enough, but you'll figure that out for yourself by tomorrow afternoon. Enjoy your trip, it's one of the most beautiful places in America!

Another poster mentioned Muir Woods in Marin County... Easy drive from SF and plenty more to see in that area. No granite monoliths or a 4,000' deep valley scoured out by a glacier, but still very nice!

I second the recommendation for Glacier Point, but don't think you'll be able to get there at this time of year. We were there in late June and the snow drifts were still huge. IF it is open, you can't miss Glacier Point. Also, Bridal Veil Falls and Yosemite Falls and a good view of El Capitan. Enjoy it. I'm seriously jealous!

You need more time. Spend the night there. You'll be on the road more than in the park.

You're in luck. Glacier Point Road is open for travel now after the winter.
Here is what to do:

Follow 120 out of Tracy/ Manteca and head straight to Yosemite Valley. It will be a fairly boring ride until Groveland. Unless you like to see flat farmland.

Then you'll start climbing into the motherlode and it gets real interesting going through some tunnels and sharp turns all the way to the Valley.

Find a park and walk around the Valley floor checking out Yosemite Falls on the North side.

Mix in a quick hike up some of the Mist trail on the East side of the Valley. You'll have to judge your time on how far you can hike up that. You can literally hike for days starting on that trail. But if you can at least make it to Vernal Falls, it will be a nice turn around spot.

Head back to the car and drive , for about an hour around to Glacier Point Road to Glacier Point. You can eat a little lunch here or down in the Valley. Check out this for a little while getting great views of Half Dome and you'll be able to see the Mist trail 3000 feet below you.

Then head back down Galcier Point Road and stop off at the trail that you can hike either to Taft Point

or Sentinel Dome for a 360 degree view of the park.

Get back on Glacier Point Road and head back towards the Valley. Stop off at the famous tunnel view overlook right after you get out of the tunnel.

Then head on out back 120 and stop off at two of the three sequoia groves at Yosemite. these are the two smaller ones, but nonetheless you'll get to see sequoias. You won't have time to go south to the Mariposa Grove. these two are called Tuolumne and Merced Groves near Crane Flat. You'll have to hike a bit.

Then head on back to SF.

Honestly, you need at least another day to see plenty more, but if you only have the one day, enjoy what you can.

Enjoy.
