Dachshunds are known to have back & hip issues. They are also a bitch to potty train.

Their name literally means "badger dog." They were bred to go into a badger's den and flush them out. They're fearless.
My neighbor has two long haired dachshunds that have barked at me for the longest time. One of them finally decided to make friends with me. The other one just sat there at a distance and looked disgusted at the traitor

They eat their poop. They will eat other dogs poop. Hell they will eat EVERY nasty thing you got laying around the house and yard. They are mean little pricks. Greedy and very territorial. I have 2 and love them they are very protective of my little girl even though they fight with her over who sits next to mommy. Also watch your corn dog, they might not look it but they are fast and can jump high lol.

I have a miniature Daschund and i've never seen mine eat her own poop however she will still shite all over the house if left alone. You have to force her sometimes to use the restroom. Everything else you said is spot on. They are very protective dogs and bark at anything and everything they don't know. My dogs has ears like a hawk and will bark at the slightest noise. Mine can jump pretty high and loves cheese

We had to have $1800 back surgery @ LSU vet school that failed on our first 3yo Black female (Had to put her down. I think she used to jump up and down off the sofa during the day). 7 years later our chocolate female has had no problems. Have steps for her to get in the bed, and she is kenneled in the day.
Barks for a few seconds at new people then will get in their lap. Hasn't eaten poop since she was a puppy. Will come running around the kitchen corner at the very first sound of me peeling a cucumber. And don't get on the floor to play with kids without expecting to play fetch.
I don't think we'll ever have another breed.
Like someone said further up, OP's dog is a puppy and probably just scared.

I would make a small ramp. It's easier on their short legs. Just keep him from jumping off things like sofas, bed,...

To hunt small animals in holes, basically.
I'm currently training my dachshund mix to be a rabbit dog.

Definitely limit your dog on jumping off of stuff if possible. We just went though 2 back surgeries with our oldest weiner dog. Now she is half cripple. She can use her back legs to extent but she will never be the same again, but she is doing good now.

Yes!!! Mine eats his poop and if I am nearby he will bring a piece and put it at my feet! This is the only dog we have ever had that eats his poop. I've read where food not processed makes them think it's more food. He keeps me very busy. Always on the look out for poop.

I love this dog but I want to punt her across the neighborhood sometimes too
Crazy as hell.

Smart, smart dogs. We have a miniature, she's pretty well-behaved, but vindictive/separation anxiety, depending upon your perspective. This dog will take a dump within 30 seconds of the door closing.
Like I said, very smart. Goes to the door to go out when we're home, knows she gets treat when she goes. Sometimes she goes out and does nothing, expecting a treat. Sometimes she goes out and does nothing, and zooms right through the kitchen without even trying for the treat.
This dog can climb. Or did when she was younger. She climbed right over the baby gate when she was young. Did it right in front of us. Made the mistake of leaving a chair in the dining room pulled out. Yep. Got home, found turds ON the dining room table. She climbed up the chair, and onto the table and shite.

THIS. Hates being left alone. She has a lab sidekick 8 years her elder that keeps her company. But she'll shite at the drop of a dime or find one of my wife's shoes to chew on.

and the den, and the yard, and the bedroom, and the carport. Pretty damn funny seeing those little legs get after it.

Weiner dog races at hockey games is a total riot.

My female black & tan died about 2+ years ago at 13. She was, by far, the best dog I've ever had. She was absolutely perfect until she started getting sick around 9 years old. I can not think of a single bad habit she had. I miss that girl. Got her my 2nd year of college
The dappled male is like a fricking cyborg. NEVER sick, no health problems, and almost 15 years old. You would never know it by the way he acts. There is no more "wienie rocket" as some of the above posters described, but he's still very chipper. Though the presence of a new 4 month old weimaraner is causing some annoyance for him. But he still has bad habits. Still has to be kenneled or he'll shite on the floor. Still will get into the cats litterbox. Still will nip the kids if they play too rough.
Dachshunds are just fantastic dogs for the most part. And for the OP, both of mine "did" stairs their whole lives. We didn't let them jump off couches and other high places, but the stairs were never a problem.

LOVE my 2 Dachshunds (mini, long-hair).
Very good dogs. Previously shad a Golden and a German Shepherd. when they passed, the wife and I wanted to "down size", but did not want a dog with "Small dog mentality" if that makes sense.
We have been very happy with the Dachshunds. They are now well trained.
One is quite the athlete and we cannot break her form jumping on or off anything. The other has put on weight and now uses the stairs to enter our bed and usually waits for someone to place him down on the floor, he will not walk down the stairs. Great dogs.

Have a 3 year old daschund / jack Russell mix I rescued. Takes about 25 steps up and down all day. Very territorial and is terrified of small children. Hates all the neighbors if they walk into our yard but loves them in their yard. Little bastard dog!!

My Dad had a full blood Red Daschund that was a mean little bastard. He would bark at me like he wanted to eat me when I first walked in their house. Then, after I sat on the couch a while, he'd calm down. If I got up to use the bathroom and go back in the living room he'd act like he had never seen me and wanted to eat me again. I used to tell him that he was the exact same size and color as a football so I was going to see how far I could kick him.
