I'd imagine his passport was confiscated

Wasn't he in a long term relationship with one of the victims? Not saying you can't commit rape in those situations but allegations from an ex need to be taken with a heavy grain of salt, especially if raised years later.

Largely testimony. The lack of rape kits and the like are due to this:
AP article on conviction

The women blamed the church for their hesitancy in going to police about Masterson. They testified that when they reported him to Scientology officials, they were told they were not raped, were put through ethics programs themselves, and were warned against going to law enforcement to report a member of such high standing.

Yes but I believe the jury did not convict for her against Masterson. Her story evolved from 2017 to 2022 according to Masterson's lawyer.
quote:
Holley dwelled on each of these elements in her cross-examination, asking why she had not mentioned in her initial interviews with Los Angeles police detectives and a prosecutor in 2017 that she had said that she was merely trying to go to sleep when she found Masterson trying to have sex with her.
“That’s the same thing to me,” she responded, “I’m Southern, we say trying to when we mean you’re doing it.”
Holley also suggested that her testimony didn’t make physical sense when she said Masterson was looking at her with “dead eyes” the entire time while also putting his full body weight on her.
“I’m trying to understand how a person’s dead weight can be on your body and how his head can be suspended above your head?” Holley said.

An ex was only one of the victims and I believe they didn’t convict him on the charge involving her.

was there evidence of this? because this sounds like just more he said / she said. believe me, i am no fan of the CoS, but i am even less a fan of putting a person behind bars for thirty years without some pretty fricking ironclad evidence, and i dont see it here.

Pretty sure they brought in Scientology experts who testified that this is standard MO for Scientology (the denial of rape and strong arming accusers to not go to authorities).

i know when i get raped, i like to report it to my church first, not the police, or friends, or family.
even if we just assume he was guilty of this, he's lived for 20 years being a normal and good citizen that hasn't gotten in trouble with the law. Yet he's going to go to prison for a he said she said 20 years after the fact for rape, for probably twice as long as the average murderer goes to prison for. I"m not saying he shouldn't go to jail, but 30 years is just ridiculous. 3 would have been more than enough given his history of being a good person for the last 20 years.

Uh, people disclose things like that to clergy and the like all of the time before going to the police.
You’re greatly underestimating the cult-like influence on its members in Scientology.

CoS isn't exactly your normal church

and these people are idiots that are just as easy to convince they were raped when they actually had consensual sex.
Not saying they weren't raped, but they are too stupid to believe anything they say.

The Scientologists lose also.

this is very true, and i think it gives some weight to their story
BUT
they also knew that the CoS was facing some serious heat back when they made this claim (this was right at the same time Leah Remini's show was running), and that making the Scientologists part of the accusation would add more weight and corresponding outrage

This one. I know what the psychologists say, that sometimes victims take a long time to come to terms, but that shouldn’t translate to prosecution.

One of them went to police in 2004 and nothing was looked into.
