Do you like living in a humid jungle for 8 months out of the year, or are you OK with putting up with a few ice storms in the winter?

Dallas by a mile but speaking of which, in 20 years there may not be a single freeway mile in the Metroplex you can drive on that's free. I see the NTTA expansions as a big longterm issue to what was a good idea in the beginning. Privatizing state highway expansion and upkeep is thievery. Don't make me pay to register my vehicle on the name if infrastructure and tax me again to support private toll use.

I like Dallas a lot. Spend a decent amount of time up there for work. But the stereotype of pretentious, keeping up with the Jones's scene is spot on. It's the kind of place where you dip into your 401k to buy a Mercedes or you just don't fit in. Was told one of the guys that works in our Dallas office has a Ferrari, but still lives at home with his parents 
. I know the having the Ferrari aspect is real as I've seen it. Don't know about living at home. But I can't see how anyone in that office makes enough to own a car like that.
I live in Houston (suburbs) and I like it well enough. Certain areas are very nice and give Dallas a run for it's money. Certain areas are terrible.

props to houston on their moderately recent light rail additions. they've had the main runs for years but they've finally expanded so it's actually useful without having to jump on buses to connect. the actual train, i believe, are manufactured by bmw - it's definitely a much better ride than any other mass transit i've ridden.

Both are bad places to live unless you love cookie cutter, plain, boring city with chain restaurants, and shopping malls.

Nicer? Dallas. It's more compact (if we're talking about the actual CITY, not the burbs) cleaner, and has ZONING. In Dallas, the nice neighborhoods just seem to go on and on for long stretches of uninterrupted niceness and are physically separated from the bad areas. In Houston, very nice areas are right next to ghettos. Houston is grimy.
Better people/more fun? Houston. Dallas attracts people who couldn't make in in NYC or LA but want to cop the same attitude in Dallas anyway. The pretentiousness is real. You also have to take a toll-road to get anywhere.
Weather? Honestly, that's a wash. Houston is more humid but Dallas hits higher temperatures in the summer and it's not like it isn't humid too. Houston has hurricane potential, but Dallas has hailstorms constantly damaging your car and roof, tornadoes that Houston rarely gets, and winter freezes Houston doesn't get.
Airports? Wash. I hate both DFW and IAH.

This is true, although you can deal with Dallas pretentiousness more easily because so much of it is total bullshite. Granted, there is a lot of money in Dallas, but most of the striver element doesn't have it. Those idiots are the ones who think people from Manhattan are jealous of life on the outskirts of University Park.

I like people that act like they live in one of these cities but actually live in the burbs. I'm sure both have great things to offer if you live in the ACTUAL city. Houston is prob more of a 'down home' feel with great restaurants and more laid back nightlife while Dallas is prob cleaner but more uppity and douchier nightlife. To each their own.

Anyone that says the ACTUAL cities of Houston or Dallas are plain, cookie cutter, filled with Applebee's has no idea what the frick they are talking about.

I honestly can't say I understand where the 30K Dallas millionaire stereotype comes from. I've never ever met someone who has come close to it. 30K people here simply don't live in McMansions and drive an E350.
Now, if you want to call them 80K Millionaires who buy Robert Graham, Vince or Varvatos at Nordstrom Rack while driving their leased 330? Throw a rock, you'll hit one.

That term was coined 30 years ago.....so inflation. And there are plenty of those in Dallas. But it's a city of almost 2 million people so there are plenty of regular people here too. The further you get away from the Uptown area the less you have to deal with the pretentiousness.
