My dad just found out he has stage 3 kidney disease. After looking it up it doesn't sound like it is the end of the road for him, but the damage is irreversible and he needs to really treat it to prevent it from getting worse. He said he's willing to change his entire life habits if he has to for this. His optimism about this is a little calming, but he's never one to show emotion and I know he is pretty worried.

A couple questions for yall:

1. Does anyone have this or has recently dealt with a family member with kidney disease? What should we be looking out for? Experiences?

2. He's looking for a specialist (assume that's a nephrologist) in the New Orleans area to help him build a treatment plan. Can anyone recommend someone based on your experiences? I looked on US News Medical Rankings and no one is ranked in Louisiana, but Oschner is "high performing"... whatever that means.

Just trying to help in any way I can.

Still don't understand why people have to feel impending death to do this. It isn't that hard.

Good luck to your dad

I consult in a nursing hime .. lots of residents have ckd3 and are basically ok. Idk a nephrologist I that area but I assume that he should see one and they’ll monitor labs and kidney function.

Know what his gfr is? Also does he have diabetes??

I’m 53 but have been seeing a cardiac prevention specialist for years as my mom has multiple stents and the family history is there. She monitors everything and I have bloodwork twice yearly. I would prefer to be around for quite some time .. I’m looking forward to grandbabies!

I asked him and will let you know.

Don't believe he has diabetes, but he has always had high blood pressure.

To the poster below asking age, he's 62.

My dad was diagnosed with it last year. He’s 69 & has always been in great shape. Lifts, eats pretty healthy, etc. He freaked out a bit at first because it sounds terrible. But since then, we’ve learned that basically everybody has stage 3 kidney disease by the time they’re 70. The key is keeping it there. Good, not radical, adjustments to diet. My old man went nuts at first. Thought the fricker was gonna go vegan. Boiled crawfish…didn’t eat any. Shot a deer…wouldn’t eat it, gave all the meat away. Now he’s realized that shite ain’t fun so he eats healthy 90% of time…like you should

My dad had end-stage kidney disease and eventually had to get dialysis. But his kidneys, fortunately, managed to function without dialysis for several years after he was diagnosed. Once he had to get dialysis, his quality of life dropped off a lot.

If your dad is otherwise healthy, pursue a transplant if things regress.

Because deer meat doesn't cause kidney disease

It’s ALL about lifestyle and diet now. You do NOT want to get any further ie stage 4 and then dialysis.
My father is on dialysis now and it has completely changed his life for the worse. He refused to change his diet and thought it would never happen to him. Before he knew it he had stage 4 and then was put on dialysis.
Get him on a renal diet asap and do not consume alcohol or if he does extremely limit it to a drink or two rarely. Make sure he stays active.
Good luck.
PS. I know some people get away with not changing their diets and they do ok but that is the exception and rare.

Dr told him no red meat. That doesn’t qualify? It mighta been cause he already had a freezer full lol. But you get the point…he went overboard with the “can’t eat that” thing

Also. There’s a great kidney doctor in Covington I forget his name. It’s a longer name, Indian fella.
He’s saved my dads life. Dad has gone to every kidney specialist from Baton Rouge to Nola and wishes he would’ve found this one years ago. I’ll try to find his name and share

Find a doctor who isn't using 1980s literature to advise his patients

If he has diabetes and hypertension he needs to get those under controlled. Otherwise, an annual or biannual visit with nephrology won’t hurt. Lots of elderly folks with comorbidities have CKD 3 and don’t progress to ESRD (needing dialysis)
