Maybe i need to add a little more context and I'll edit above as well. It's not that i know nothing. I've been to ww2 museum in new Orleans a couple times, I've seen the movies and band of brothers and such. I've watched most of the documentaries on history channel and ahc. Others on streaming services.
I obviously don't know how long it'll take to "scratch this itch" I've had 20+ years. But that's why I'm asking here. I know many of you have so much into this subject so I know yall have favorites for what intrigues you.
And I'm ready to dive in

I would start with reading "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".

Going to be honest with you, if you’re as interested in military history as much as some of us in here, that itch will never be scratched.
Every time I read a book on a various topic, I learn something and it brings me down another rabbit hole to learn about.

Carlin couldn’t help but blow the cock of the USSR in that series. Said the Russians had the best generals and field marshals of the entire war. That’s about the time I stop listening every time I give it a listen.
I thought it was the weakest Carlin podcast I've listened to so far. I think everyone tries to will it into being great because it's a perfect subject matter for a great podcast and Carlin is a great history podcaster. That being said, I found it's depth to be rather shallow.
Robert Citino gives a few really good lectures on Youtube about the Wehrmacht that are brief and very engaging. He's a great speaker. Couldn't recommend them more and I wish he would do a podcast though he's busy writing books instead.

The Longest Day is coming on TCM in 20 minutes.
Covers the D-Day invasion and aftermath. The best WWII movie ever made.
While I do like the movie I believe midway gives it a run for its money as best WWII movie

I believe that it was one of his first podcast series as each episode was 1 hr-1.5 hrs. There’s just too much subject matter for only four episodes at 1-1.5 hrs an episode. I don’t think his research was then what it is now. But he’s also only getting out two fricking episodes a year now though so there’s some give and take.
Just really doesn’t sit well with me his thoughts on Soviet leadership and generalship in WWII.

Never heard of this, going to give it a listen.

WWII In Colour is the best WW2 documentary out there.
It’s great but better than “The World at War?” That’s a masterpiece.

Watch the docu-series World War II in Color (also known as World War II in HD Colour) on Netflix. Great documentary that gives you a good overview of the war.

He's pretty good. His WWI by the week was really good.

Two days at the WW2 museum: One day in the Pacific Theater and the next in the European.
The Tom Hanks narrated hour long show is awesome as well.

Well if you want to understand WWII, you should first learn about WWI. Without a fundamental understanding of WWI, you’ll never understand WWII. And to understand WWI, you’ll need to to first learn about the Franco-Prussian War, the unification of Germany and rise of the German Empire, Bismarck’s diplomatic strategy of isolating France, the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th & early 20th Centuries, First Balkan War, and Second Balkan War. You’ll also want to read up on the rise of the USA as a major world power following the Spanish-American War. Likewise, study the Russo-Japanese War. Once you’ve studied all these, you should be able to to start to understand WWII.

This, you nailed it. Recommend “the Second World Wars” by Victor Davis Hanson. Taking the class at Hillsdale College. It is free, but made a nice donation and they sent me his book. It is well worth your time and a donation. His youtube videos are awesome also!

Check out the book The Second World War by Antony Beevor. It’s huge but covers everything in the whole war in extreme detail.
ETA: Also, if you want to know more about the Eastern Front, check out the documentary Soviet Storm on YouTube. It is a very extensive and well done documentary solely about the east.

How much do I have to donate to get the book? I do get Imprimis from them. Although, I can’t seem to get them mail me a copy, they only send emails of it to me.

I enrolled on-line. Started the course, after 2 lectures, was loving it. Fascinating material brought up I had never thought on. I went over and made a $100.00 donation and they sent me the book. I think they will send it for less, but I was really into the class. I have since donated some more just for the heck of it. It is worth your time and money. Semper Fi!

Good luck... I’ve spent the better part of 20 years just learning about the Nomandy invasions. I’ve even toured the beaches and drop zones and such.
I may be transferred to Europe next year. Know why I want to go? So I can tour all the various battlefields and go study everything in detail.

Just started The War on Netflix.
I know Ken Burns is great, but is this worth the watch? Anything else better on Netflix?
