This morning my wife and I were in our living room watching TV. She had the laptop and I had a music magazine. We saw an ad on TV for a car and we mentioned that we should check it out. Later, I mentioned that I liked a certain drumset and showed her the pic from the magazine (I did not mention the name of the drumset). She scrolled down the page on the laptop and noticed two ads that were suggested for us. The first one was the exact car we saw on TV and the second ad was the EXACT drumset that I showed her.

I can wrap my brain around the car ad, but how did it know what drumset I was talking about? I'm baffled by this one. Anyone on here care to shed some light?

I have seen some creepy shite like that myself recently.

Was the car a 2016 Porsche Macan? Because I have an ad for one right now.

Care to share? I'm not sure how I feel about all of it. Probably because no one has really said anything about it in detail.

She probably googled it. Or Jody was borrowing your laptop making her wish list

She didn't google it. I have googled that drumset before, but that was at a minimum over 6 months ago. Even so, I have googled hundreds of different drumsets...how did it know which one if I did not say it out loud?

That makes more sense.

I have a friend whose degree is from Kent St. I called him the other day and afterward, like 10min later, I saw Kent St ads here on TD.

Neither of us had mentioned Kent St on the call.

There have been others but that is the weirdest.

I know that they do connect the dots a lot. So, you're talking to "John Doe". They know, through John's info online, that he goes to Kent St....have you looked up anything on college's lately?

But still...I POINTED at the drumset and the ad was for the same one!!!!

Weird shif like that has happened to me to before. Things I've talked about out loud showing up as ads without ever looking at anything on the computer. I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all, but the ad agencies are up to something. That is way too big of a coincidence with the drum set, especially when I and others have had the same thing happen to us.

I have a Falken ad and a Kawasaki ad right now on my mobile. I've never Googled, spoke about or bought anything ever from either.

Well I have spoken a bit about Kawasaki heavy equipment years ago, but the ad is for cycles.

tl/dr: Your theory is not 100% correct.

This shite is getting out of hand. All I did was read this thread and think "this has to be an invasion of privacy issue".
Now, I have a Lifelock security ad displayed on TD..

WTF?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist in any way, shape, or form. I have no explanation for this either, I wouldn't even know where to begin to try & explain it. But this shite has happened to me too many times for it to be a coincidence

Are you saying that advertisement companies utilize the mics on your computers and phones to tailor your advertisements based on what you talk about?

I'm not sure I buy that

I'm pretty sure those ads listen through your phone or laptop mic.

I'm not a believer in custom advertising at all. If it existed, I would have an ad for a beautiful big tits blonde who swallows and obeys my every command pop up.

This is 100% true. My friend and I were talking in my kitchen about the zombie run that they did a while back at the centroplex. That night he gets a Facebook ad about a zombie experience thing at the 13th Gate. He doesn't watch zombie shows I haven't watch The Walking Dead ever. But somehow they knew to Target that ad right then. No googling necessary, it just listens.

I know for a fact that if you have voice recognition for phones or TVs that you are subject to third party advertising because your words are being scanned. I guess it's possible that some type of malware could be on the laptop dong the same.

Why doesn't the OP 'test' the laptop a with a few different verbal 'wants' and see what happens?

Were you looking at a magazine about motorcycles? If not, then your point isn't valid.
