CSB: Vail blizzard edition

This morning, my wife (9 months pregnant) and I were just sitting around and I was having a cup of coffee while she was doing her nesting routine of trying to get things situated and worrying about everything.
In an effort to distract her and settle her down some, I suggest we drive over to Vail from our house in Colorado Springs. That’s about a 3 hour drive, and I figured it would be fun. We’re both adventurous and love the snow. Since Colorado Springs hasn’t gotten much snow this year, we thought it would be a nice idea. It was sunny and ~50 degrees in COS. So we load up our dog and head out...
Fast forward a couple of hours, and we’ve made it through Denver and have gotten onto I-70 towards Vail. The mountains are snow covered and beautiful, and the weather is still nice. The wife looks at me and says “we need to turn around... I don’t feel well.” I looked at her like she was crazy and asked her if she had lost her mind. Told her she was fine, etc... but she persisted. I wasn’t having it... we had driven a couple hours already, this was what we had agreed to do, and we were going to have a good time, dammit.
So we turned around and headed back home...
And I was pissed. I pouted like a child and we didn’t say much to each other on the ride back home because I’m a petulant child.
When we made it home, I just turned ESPN on and was watching football and scrolling through Twitter, and I start seeing this stuff...
Sho’ am glad my otherwise normal feeling wife all of a sudden started feeling weird.

Ive been stranded for hours on 70 eastbound between silverthorne and tunnel. Its no fun.

I know how to drive in snow but I wouldn't want to be on a snow packed I70.

Yeah I just saw that. I-70 is getting pounded. We live in the Springs also. We went up to Castle Rock two days ago go get my wife a pixel 2...It was snowing from Monument to Denver. Not a damn flake down here though. Last year around this time it was snowing pretty good.

And here I thought CDOT knew how to handle snow better than anyone in the country.

Glad we missed the experience.

This is my 3rd winter here, and it’s been by far the strangest of the 3. Snowed mid to late October enough to dust the ground, and has done that once or twice more - but that’s it. Kinda lame.

They’ve been catching hell on Twitter. Always felt they’ve done a really good job overall - at least since I’ve been here. When snow is coming down that hard and fast, I’m not sure there’s much that can be done. I don’t know much about it though.

I flew into DEN the wknd before Christmas last year and it had just dumped 18-24” that day from the mtns all the way to Denver. I had rented a mid-size 2wd car. Luckily, my DL was expired and they wouldn’t rent me the car. Heard I-70 was a parking lot and leaving at midnight would’ve taken me 7 hrs...if I made it.
Worst part was about 15 family members flew/drove in 3-4 days later from SELA and Houston. I was worried as hell they one of them would wreck while there for the next week. They were driving I-70 between Georgetown, Silverthorne, and Leadville.
I did drive one day and made the mistake of driving the pass coming in from the south to Keystone. HOLEE SHEET, what a drive that was.

It's been a weird winter here in Nebraska. For the most part it's been warm with lots of days in the 40's now this week it's coming down. Snowing heavily right now with about 2.5" on the ground and for my entire 10 day the warmest it gets is about 15-20 degrees, most nights are around 0.

If anyone had checked the weather reports today would have known the mountains were going to be nasty driving. It was bad enough driving after Thursday's snow.
Not sure what CDOT can do here. At some point, people should just not drive that stretch of 70 past the tunnels if they don't have to.

What’s a normal winter like where you live? I never really thought of Nebraska as a winter state. It’s been frigid here recently, just no moisture. Currently 14 degrees with a wind chill of -8 according to my weather app.

I was in Nebraska in February one time and the damn high was 0 one day. I'm from south Louisiana and we aren't equipped for that shite
