Here is the kicker... if you get an implant you will also need a crown....but that is the way to go

If you go with an implant, go to a specialist. Don’t let a general dentist talk you into letting him do the implant because he took a 2 week class on them. Maybe some general dentists are good at it but if it’s my jaw on the line, I’m paying the extra buck for a specialist who does them much more frequently.

You’re ignorant my friend.

I say that b/c implants are so much more than “screwing it into the bone.” Any “specialist’ can do that. You need a true implant dentist that takes into account prosthetic positioning, soft tissue availability, available bone, and implant positioning. Going to a dental specialist doesn’t mean that you have an implant specialist.

There are lots of politics involved in this but the best choice is to find a true specialist in implant dentistry or someone who is working towards that. Visit the American Academy of Implant Dentistry to find a real implantologist to solve your problems.

Most implant "specialists" are going to be periodontists or oral surgeons.

I would say that they are “specialists” that place implants but not true “implant specialists.” The only perform half of the procedure.

I’m far from ignorant. I was a surgical assistant for an oral surgeon for 7 years.

Apologies then my friend.

You’ve been brainwashed by OS to think they are the only ones smart enough or trained enough to place implants.

As a poster previously mentioned. I would recommend a OMS or a perio.

I’ve been out of dentistry for almost a decade now and am aware that the new crop of oral surgeons do a lot of plastic surgery so they may not be the best choice for implants.

How is my comment about general dentists ignorant? Their bread and butter is crowns, fillings, and simple extractions. Anyone who does that 95% of the time will not go anywhere near me or my family with an implant.

I guess that’s just me not wanting a failed implant and possible adjacent tooth loss.

You do you my man.

Did you happen to practice in Hammond, LA?

Regarding General dentist placing implants, well the OS knows less about crown and bridge than a properly trained general dentist knows about implant placement and proper restoration.

Having difficult to restore implants is what prompted me to educate myself in implant placement. The patients, when they get their implant crowns, never blame the Oral Surgeon when their implant is un aesthetic or has a food impaction issue.

Cone Beam Technology facilitates guided implant placement that is safe and optimally restorable.

The dental world is plenty big enough to allow both OS and DDS to place implants. I'll do me, and you do you.

I didn’t practice. My father is a retired OMS and yes he practiced in Hammond.

Never imagined an implant would be an alternative to a crown. I would go for a crown if the supporting bone is good.

You cannot get a crown for a missing tooth. That is completely different. You either need a bridge or an implant, never just a crown.

Go with the crown first and then you can go implant later. Much less expensive and time consuming to start with a crown if possible.
