This is true. I've been to a few dozen countries and the only a-hole border agents I've come across have been Canadian (well, one in Trinidad too). Odds are about 50/50. But usually the wait isn't too bad. One time, though, we crossed from Montana headed north towards Calgary and the US and Canada were having a pissing match. The line took about two hours and everyone crossing got grilled and searched. And that was happening in both directions by both countries.

Canada and Australia both did, but Canada was way more of a pain in the arse. The immigration agent at Winnipeg told me I needed to email him whenever I came back in to avoid a 2.5 hour delay. They also knew where my 401k was held, for some reason, but that was via plane.

I’ve crossed from Vermont into Canada a few times by car. Never did they search the car or open the trunk. It was quicker and easier getting out of Canada than it was getting into Canada every time.
We had kids with us with passports, but that seemed to be their biggest concern.

I’ve never driven into Australia but even flying in there I found the process as challenging or worse than driving into Canada. Australia really seemed concerned that we were there for some free medical care.

I believe they will check your criminal history. If you've ever had a DUI expect to be denied entry.
Just out of curiosity….. is there a timeframe to this requirement? Does it have to been within the last 20 years? 30 years? Or at anytime?

We crossed over from Michigan with our three kids who had passports. Dude was a dick. The kids wanted stamps on their passports to show they went to Canada and the a-hole declined. Just to be a dick.
frick Canada.
frick Canada.

We were not allowed to bring some cherries back into USA.

No timeframe. They will go back 30 years at least. They'll still let you in if you're not an arse, though.

Did this recently in Lubec Maine to Campobello Island Canada. Was asked name, where from, purpose of visit and where we were going. Any tobacco, alcohol, firearms or bear spray, etc, in car. No issues.
On the way back in the US, we give the border patrol our passports. The usual questions from him-then he asks for my driver's license. Then checks the trunk. It was more difficult getting back into the US than entering Canada. Maybe we looked like 60+ year old retired convicts or he was just bored at the very slow border crossing.

No criminal history. Clean record.

It will just be me. I'm just looking to do something with my free time for one day.
