Crate training dog question

I just got a 2 yr old rescue, I think he was crate trained as a puppy bc he mostly likes his crate, even goes in there by choice sometimes when we are home.
Every now and then he really fights it, he gets in and is fine but pretty much makes you drag him in there.
I know you're not supposed to ever put him in there upset, but when we are leaving the house what choice do we have?
Basically, what's a strategy to get him in there content? Especially since he gets in no problem the majority of the time

Is he going to the bathroom in the house? Chewing?

Get a couple of those toys that you can put treats in.

No he's not, he's a really well behaved dog. He still wants to jump on furniture when we aren't around or looking though. Once he shows he won't do that we can start to leave the door open, and start the transition to him roaming the house.

Sounds like you've got a good dog. I know it's tough when they're being stubborn. Just keep calm and calmly lead the dog into the cage. Do it at times other than when you have to leave. Don't force the dog, but lead the dog.

Throw his favorite toys in there
I also sprinkle a treat or very small amount of dog food to distract him

Continue to make the crate a happy place. Also, before you leave the house, go wear him out. You are teaching the dog discipline; you need to be disciplined in this manner. I know it's hard to think about it, but 30 min before you are planning to leave, exercise him, let him take care of business, cool down, then in the crate for rest.

He may be associating his crate with you leaving. Mix it up a bit and give him a toy or treat encouraging him to enter his crate so your dog will not associate you leaving as a negative experience.
