I started a job with a long commute so I've been looking every few days on different sites for something to purchase to pile miles on.

2005 Acura TL at a great price.

Seller's response on my initial message:

quote:

My name is xxxxx, and I'm emailing you about 2005 Acura TL with an gasoline engine, automatic transmission and only 79.000 k miles. Never had or need any paint/body work done, garaged keep always, without any mechanical problems, tires and wheels are in great shape as well, electric is working perfectly. The engine 3.2L V6 gas, runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Has a clean and clear US title in my name and there are no liens or loans on it. This vehicle was used by my husband who died 4 month ago. I'm in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell it before the 15 of the next month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store it. Hate to sell it but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year. If you interested i can send you more pics.

Asked to see it in person:

quote:

Right now I'm in a military base. We are training, getting ready for leaving the country. The delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 7 days testing period after delivery. During that 7 days testing period I will not be getting any money.I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can get the ball rolling.

I'm sure some sucker will send her the asking price sight unseen.

Go for it. If you can't trust our military, who can you trust?

Since when is a person in a military base? We say we are "on" base. Someone with shaky English thinks they are smart.

And we would never disclose when we would be departing on any movement. OPSEC and all.

Any medical personnel would be leaving with their unit, not their "team". Holy frick. The more I read the more inaccurate this becomes

All the missing adjectives and pro-nouns. Jesus Christ. If someone with even a middle school education and catch this bullshite I have low hopes for America.

The death told me it was a scam, and I asked to see the car in a followup message to fully confirm it.

Can someone explain to me what happens next should someone fall for this?

I know this is an obvious scam, but what could they really do with a name, phone number, and address? Am I stupid?

ETA: I was recently selling something on there and someone contacts me saying they will pay me almost double what I was asking to ship the item out of country and asked for my paypal info? Could they somehow pay me and then take the money back? Obvious scam but I really could not see how I could get burned that way? How does this work?

They pay and you ship the item. Then they claim they never received it and paypal reimburses them the money before you ever receive it.

Eta: They do this by getting you to agree to a shady shipping service with no delivery confirmation.

Had the same situation happen with me when I tried to buy 2 fishing boats. Kept getting reasons why I couldn't see the boats in person and then pay the owner in cash. Wanted me to send the money to a eBay service. Don't think so!! Have bought over 700 items from eBay, including 3 cars. Never had a request like this. Have to be careful. they make everything sound so real.
Glad to know most of us are on to these type of scams.

EBay doesn't offer a "side service" that let's you sell something off their website but use their payment system. Anyone who falls for that deserves to be scammed.

Now is they said PayPal, then I can see where someone might fall for it.

I have run into that twice on trying to buy a boat on Craig's List; also, once shopping for a tractor. They will make it look local and when you go to inquiring, you find out differently. I have had the military story and the widow story. I don't buy anything sight unseen and give out no info.

Actually found a decent boat on Craig's and it was within two hours of travel from home. Again, I want to see in person what I am buying first. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
