Was getting your CPA worth it?

Taking my final classes now to be able to sit for it and holy shite this material is no joke. I can do it but I would be lying if the thought of "is it even worth it" has crept into my mind.

Getting the actual accounting degree was tough but still doable as long as I put the time in to study.

Main reason I want it is to keep my options open jobs wise and I have been told it helps with a higher salary down the road. What say you?

If you plan to stay in accounting and have the hours, it’s definitely worth it.

My CPA is this small nerdy guy that is somewhat socially awkward but knows how to run numbers and seems to have memorized every deduction in the tax code. He saves me tons of money every year.

My current favorite people in the world:
1. Jesus
2. Wife
3. Accountant
4. Pioneerbasketball (it’s March madness)

In April you can swap #2 and 3.

Yes, it takes a year. That's not that much time in the grand scheme of things. Nut up, bare down, and get it done.

I’m not one but put both my daughters through LSU with accounting majors. My oldest finishes with a masters and completed the 4 part CPA last year. Youngest is finishing her 30 additional hours to qualify to sit for the test. Wife and I have seen the dedication needed to accomplish this and it’s not easy but no one can take those 3 letters away once you’ve earned them and stay in good standing. You can be a simple bookkeeper or run a large corporation. Your options are unlimited. Our goal was to have our girls self supportive. Plus side for wife and I we’ve earned lifetime free tax prep.
GET THE CPA IT PAYS DIVIDENDS.
Best of luck

It's a SOLID career. Not the most lucrative career but the money is very good and stable all the way through the career. I know people in high-level sales that make WTF money...I probably won't ever make that.

Job stability is amazing..I could go take a $%#$ on my bosses desk and have interviews for a similar job tomorrow.

It starts paying well and keeps paying well. Has the potential to be just as lucrative as anything else but you need luck, hard work, etc.

Hours BLLLLOOOOW. You need to be available A LOT. Especially the higher you go. Honestly, a lot of things suck about it but you don't work for your health. You work to live. It's good for that most of the time.

Credentials are generally always worth having, particularly when establishing yourself in a field (and trust me, your doing this for a long time in any field). It will always look good on a resume and is required to be the top guy in a lot of circumstances. So unless your plan is to be an accountant in a non public capacity, working for others, and usually not the boss, I assume it is worth it.

At least that is what my niece told me back before shoe became a stay at home mom. She passed all 4 parts of the exam her first try, didn't need it where she worked but it got her a bump in pay.

Good luck

I'm sort of in the same boat. I have my CIA and am studying for the CISA right now. After that I'm considering sitting for the CPA. I need to take one more BLAW class before I can sit for it, then I'd need another 20 hours or so to get the license. I'd take the remaining hours after I would pass, though.

Yep for sure

It's a bitch and I almost quit after a while but stuck with it. Probably one of the biggest job security things you can accomplish and lots of options.

Yes. It makes you much more marketable. Actual public accounting experience to boot will open up tons of doors.

Do not talk yourself out of doing this. If you have a career in accounting, you will be answering to CPAs your entire career without it.
