Fun fact: New Mexico was named that approximately 250yrs before the country of Mexico existed. It was named after the Aztec valley of Mexico in 1563.

I worked for a federal agency where a girl (very nice, good person) had never heard of Saudi Arabia and thought every ocean was the Atlantic ocean (as in, oceans were combined and there was only 1 - the Atlantic). Imagine talking to a 30+ year old who has lived in the United States her entire life and who becomes perplexed when you mention the Pacific Ocean.

She probably made 70k a year.

When i was younger i had people on line ask me where i was from. When i said arkansas they literally acted like i made a place up. Seriously. Some dude from a town of 3k middle of no where knows all 50 states, but these west coast "intellectuals" cant even bother to look at a map.

This kind of thing happens quite often to New Mexicans. You will see stories like this pop up in the local media every now and then. We find it amusing.

The unidentified clerk wouldn’t accept Clarkson’s driver’s license from New Mexico as proof of identity, the Las Cruces Sun News reported. The clerk pressed Clarkson for a passport, saying that he was a foreign citizen

The dude may be an idiot but he isn't totally wrong.

New Mexico is a state as Hal Mumme will attest, but it does issue driver's licenses to illegals. When the republican governor, Martinez, was running for office she promised to change it so that only citizens could get DL's and you had to bring proof like social security cards and birth certificates to the DMV. She got a hella lotta heat for threatening to change it. Don't know if she ever did once she got in office.

Lots of illegals and US families of illegals up in that place wanting to keep the status quo.

So in truth the NM DL doesn't mean anything regarding US citizenship, but with a name like Gavin Clarkson 10:1 he ain't no Mexican.

This thread is further proof that the Founding Fathers were geniuses by creating a republic instead of a democracy.

Doesn't surprise me. Some people in the world are just not educated.

I mean a clerk at the hospital asked me yesterday what's a colon...

Fun facts about NM:

It is neither new nor Mexican.

(Okay that is just a slogan on tshirts they sell at the gas station)

Actual surprising facts:

1. The name New Mexico (Nuevo Mexico) was given almost 250 years before the country of Mexico existed. Which means the state/territory/province was not named after the country of Mexico.

2. The land was under Spanish rule until 1824, under Mexican rule until 1848, and under US rule ever since. So the settlers of the area were Spanish for hundreds of years, Americans for 150+ years, and Mexicans for only 24 years.

This will only get worse with humanity.

The pathetic constant stream of status updates and selfies are overwhelming our society's understanding of the real world.

We are fukkkked.

You would be surprised how often this happens. New Mexico Magazine had a monthly pieced titled "One of our 50 is missing"
