Another potential danger of a nearby lightning strike is a gas leak inside the house. The corrugated gas lines within a house are susceptible to developing a hole when the energy flows through it, especially if the runs are more than recommended. And obviously a gas leak can leave to much worse issues

A friend's house was hit by lightning and it blew bricks from the chimney into his yard.

My mom's house got hit about 15 years ago. Luckily for her the bolt hit the telephone line running from the street, which crossed over the cable line running to the neighbor's house, so the charge split at that junction. If it hadn't split she probably would have had a fire.

It blew the telephone junction box off the side of the house and melted it. It fried the telephone that was plugged in on that side of the house. It also split the sheetrock in the bedroom closest to the incoming bolt. Not only did it split, it laid one edge over the other like a tectonic plate.

I haven't had any issues this morning. I assume we're good but man, I've never heard anything like that before. Like someone else said, it sounded like a bomb went off in my yard.

This year two times a tree was struck by lightning in our neighborhood and all of us in the subdivision thought it struck right outside our windows. Whole house shook at my place. The lightening targets were about a block away from me. One tree split down the middle but was still standing and smoldering. The other just about shattered.
