I think I misread your comment on Carriers for Japan in 1941.

One thing we will probably never know is how the various battleship philosophies would have impacted the outcome. The US battleship philosophy was never compromise protection for firepower or speed, while Japan embraced battle cruisers and the paper fleet concept, battleships with less armor and less weight to enhance speed or firepower.

Fun fact: Japan was our nominal ally in WWI although they didn't participate much.
