But, yes I can explain the magic trick because I am an amateur magician who can actually perform the trick.
Watch the last time he pulls back hard on his rubber band. He goes back, high, left, right, back again, and then low. It's when he goes low that he uses a sleight of hand technique using his middle finger to bring his rubber band to his side of her rubber band.
From that point on he's just creating an illusion. He actually pushes his rubber band against her rubber band which gives the impression that his rubber band is still on her side. Watch closely...you can see it happen. Everything from that point on is acting and selling the trick.
Very effective.

I'm not, but it wasn't hard to figure out that was where the work was getting done.
That said, I do applaud the skill involved in producing the illusion.
