I can’t imagine what those people in North Korea are/will be suffering from this outbreak. The average person there will get NO help from that govt and there’s no way in hell they are going to let the WHO inside.

Speaking for myself, it has been really interesting so far. Not just the epidemiological data (such as it is), but also the political and economic scenes being played out. As always, the facts are elusive and the posturing from all sides is evident.

The past month has already been interesting when it blew by SARS numbers and escaped China in record speed despite draconian quarantines.
But the next month will be interesting for you in particular because we will see just how much this is going to impact our life here in the US.

So percentage wise of deaths, how does this compare to the flu?

WTF is going on in Iran?
quote:
Vancouver, Canada - A sixth case of the novel #coronavirus has been diagnosed in British Columbia after a woman in her 30s returned to the province from Iran. Dr. Bonnie Henry: “This one, clearly, is unusual in that the travel to Iran is something new”.

Two things that cause me to be at least a little worried:
1. If it takes such draconian measures like China implemented to slow this, that doesn't reassure me that a Western country could stop a serious outbreak once it starts. Not for medical reasons but more political and legal issues. The US will not be able to shut whole cities down because people will start filing lawsuits claiming their freedoms are being infringed upon.
2. The large number of serious/critical cases. In a wide spread outbreak that is what will kill more people IMO. When we start running out of beds, resources, and hospital staff to care for more people.

@AndrewBeatty
Two Australians who were diagnosed with #coronavirus after being evacuated from the Diamond Princess had tested negative in Japan, officials tell @AFP
What's concerning here is the Japanese are letting everyone off the ship that tests negative if I recall correctly.

I was just watching korean movie “Flu”(2013). In the movie at the beginning of the outbreak, this Dr/scientist was warning local gov officials about a deadly virus and advising them to shut down the city. Of course, they didn’t take him serious and began chastise him. Twilight zone moment for me.

If all the numbers being reported are correct, then this virus is x15-x20 more deadly than your normal run of the mill flu.

If you know exactly what the situation is in China, I'd love to hear it straight from the source of truth. They've changed their case count criteria twice in the past week or so, so nobody even knows what the numbers mean. They wouldn't allow the CDC in the country. They've apparently been suppressing "rumors" on the internet. They're shutting down entire provinces for something that is being described as similar to seasonal influenza.
Gathering accurate information is always difficult with epidemics even if everyone fully cooperates, which doesn't seem to be the case here. Elusive seemed like a good description to me.

This is the key IMO and possibly why we are seeing higher death tolls in Wuhan. Look at the percentage of critical cases. The system will be quickly over run with a virus that is this contagious if those numbers continue to hold.

I really hope that Kim calls Trump for help if it gets there. I doubt it would happen, but their people would be doomed.

I don’t think IF is even in question.
If it’s not there already it’s a matter of when.

It's always incredibly difficult to calculate this because no one knows the denominator.
More than half of the cases on that cruise ship have been asymptomatic. Being confined to a cruise ship makes it easy to test everyone, which is what they're doing, but it goes to show how the number of real world cases is likely substantially higher than the confirmed cases.
I say that to point out the seasonal flu mortality is often based on the massive estimated cases and not simply the laboratory confirmed cases. It's incredibly tough to find an apples to apples comparison of these viruses.
