From what little I know about lopinavir/ritonavir, that makes sense for a viral infection like coronavirus.

Also worth noting those drugs produced favorable results when used during the SARS outbreak.

Also worth noting that it’s deployment and efficacy isn’t news, it’s just that the media is only just getting wind of it.

Intentions to use market drugs that target reverse transcriptase are weeks old (and yes, it was posted in this thread)

Cocktail of flu, HIV drugs appears to help fight coronavirus: Thai doctors

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai doctors have seen success in treating severe cases of the new coronavirus with combination of medications for flu and HIV, with initial results showing vast improvement 48 hours after applying the treatment, they said on Sunday.

The doctors from Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok said a new approach in coronavirus treatment had improved the condition of several patients under their care, including one 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan who tested positive for the coronavirus for 10 days.

The drug treatment includes a mixture of anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir, in combination with flu drug oseltamivir in large doses.

"This is not the cure, but the patient's condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.

"The outlook is good but we still have to do more study to determine that this can be a standard treatment."

Chinese health officials have already been administering the HIV and flu drugs to fight the coronavirus. The use of the three together in a cocktail seemed to improve the treatment, the Thai doctors said.

Another doctor said that a similar approach in two other patients resulted in one displaying some allergic reaction but the other showed improvement.

"We have been following international practices, but the doctor increased the dosage of one of the drugs," said Somsak Akkslim, director-general of the Medical Services Department, referring to the flu medicine Oseltamivir.

Thailand has recorded 19 cases of coronavirus. Of the Thai patients, eight have recovered and gone home while 11 are still under treatment in hospitals.

Somsak said the health ministry will meet on Monday to discuss the successful treatment in the case of the 70-year-old but said it is still too soon to say that this approach can be applied to all cases.

"Initially we will apply this approach only to severe cases," he said.

Guess the bio weapon was a dud

Ignorance is truly bliss for people think this is a prototype candidate for a bioweapon.

I feel for people whose job it is to actually defend against that.

It’s well known how sophisticated the bioweapon agent field is.....this is a joke.

Hell, it’s public knowledge how to engineer smallpox, one of the deadliest conjunctions of contagious and lethality, to both be MORE lethal and immune to all possible vaccines.

And no, that’s not an exaggeration. It would flip your immune system off like a literal switch, so it doesn’t matter if you are vaccinated for it.

The animal studies they did with the change lifted mortality to 100%

I’m actually kinda jealous for people who think this is even a possible intermediate candidate for a bioweapon

Additionally critical cases jump from 1,562 to 1,701. 80 people were discharged as well.

Damn, sounds like they are doing something right. Haven’t heard of any of the other cases outside of China being discharged and deemed recovered

You are reading too much of Tom Clancy.

There’s no real way that I’m aware of to cause a time delay like that.

Especially for something like the flu.

HIV can get away with it because it’s a slow burn.

But the act of coughing? Generating mucus filled with virus to infect others? These things that help it spread are also products of an immune system that detected the virus and is fighting it.

Of the first 5 cases in Germany, all 5 were symptom free within a week.

Good to know... So basically, 1st world conditions lead to quick recovery and life as normal.

Oh I see. “Opinion papers” are damning if you disagree, but it’s okay if you agree.

Awfully lot of usage of “May” in that excerpt.

And you seem talking about the WHO meta paper as singular. They didn’t do any original research or derive any empirical conclusion. It was based on evaluating literally thousands of papers on the topic (although granted, the majority didn’t meet their parameters of the topic).

Pretty much.

Here is the only realistic bad outcome: infection becomes so prevalent so fast that there is no 1st world conditions to be had. All hospital beds taken so you go home with a info sheet and a Tylenol.

Full disclosure: I don’t think this is major, but it’s a significant enough risk that I started purchasing extra groceries.

Nothing major and nothing all at once.

Just building the option to remain at home if the situation warrants. If not, we’ll I’ll just thaw out the meat cuts and other frozen foods in my day to day cooking.

I honestly don’t think it’s warranted, but I’ve seen this script in action enough times to know that if it is, it’s already too late to prepare.

Only passed it on to family whose medical history would make viral pneumonia not fun.

Jesus.

Assuming they don’t have inside intel (and the doomsayers just jizzed in my pants hearing me say that), that is absurdly overblown.

Although to be fair, it’s probably just the insinuation in the report that’s over blown.

The result is standard military contingency prep.

Check German #1, I'm not sure if they used the word "recovered" or not.

HIV drugs are known to have significant side effects. Maybe not such a big concern with short term use. I assume oseltamivir is Tamiflu. It caused my mom to have a psychotic reaction that was pretty frightening. IIRC Japan banned it.
