As long as they're not using them for drive bys, it doesn't bother me. 'cause that would get confusing.

I don’t like seeing them burn the fuel paid with my tax dollars to commute from BR out to st Francisville and back everyday.

Somewhat, but if you drive past my wife or daughter stranded on the side of the road without stopping to check on them, you are an a-hole.

I may be wrong but I think they are only required to stop if the situation appears to be emergent?

They're cops, not mechianics.

Most businesses and neighborhoods are happy to have cops use cars for personal business. Bad guys tend to stay away when they see a car parked in front.

A lot of apartment complexes are offering discounted rent to cops driving marked units.

Don't worry, it will change where you live. In LA California they go in plain clothes and in POV because they'll frickin' get murdered, or their families butchered! You're just 10 years behind the times. Merica!

Dont care one bit. They usually make shite money and deal with the absolute dregs of society on a daily basis. If a perk of their job is getting to use their patrol car off duty then so be it.

It used to be that Baton Rouge City Police had to live 40 miles, or less from their station.

Many are on call 24/7. They have a 30 minute response time. They actually get in trouble if they arrive late.

Think about it. You are at the mall and get called out. Make it to Plank and Evangeline in 30 minutes.

i got no issue with it for running around town as long as they arent putting over a hundred miles on them a week for personal use.

as mentioned, the presence of the car alone is somewhat of a deterrent so the perk has a public benefit to it.

Doesn't particularly bother me, but it's against the law

Federal Statute:

5 C.F.R. §§ 2635.703, .704, and .705

It is your responsibility as an employee to protect and conserve Government owned or leased property and vehicles and to use them only for authorized purposes. You are misusing a Government vehicle when you use it for personal benefit as opposed to using it for the benefit of the Government.

State Statute:

quote:

§ 45.4 Personal use of Government property.
(a) Employees may use Government property only for official business or as authorized by the Government. See 5 CFR 2635.101(b)(9), 2635.704(a). The following uses of Government office and library equipment and facilities are hereby authorized:

(1) Personal uses that involve only negligible expense (such as electricity, ink, small amounts of paper, and ordinary wear and tear); and

(2) Limited personal telephone/fax calls to locations within the office's commuting area, or that are charged to non-Government accounts.

(b) The foregoing authorization does not override any statutes, rules, or regulations governing the use of specific types of Government property (e.g. internal Departmental policies governing the use of electronic mail; and 41 CFR (FPMR) 101-35.201, governing the authorized use of long-distance telephone services), and may be revoked or limited at any time by any supervisor or component for any business reason.

(c) In using Government property, employees should be mindful of their responsibility to protect and conserve such property and to use official time in an honest effort to perform official duties. See 5 CFR 2635.101(b)(9), 2635.704(a), 2635.705(a).

Last time I checked police werent roadside assistance and arent mechanics. Tell them to keep that cellphone charged so they can call you to fix their problem.

This advice sounds harsh but it’s spot on. Your loved ones will avoid a lot of problems if the police drive on by. They are more likely to end up with a citation or worse by a cop who thinks that he or she is not a public servant.
