fricker was so old, he committed a crime in Alaska before it became a state and served time in Alcatraz, which has been closed for 60 years
Questions...how does one live to be 95 years old in prison? And I wonder how much the taxpayers shelled out on this dude to keep him an alive ole man for so long.

Harvey Carignan, a mass murderer nicknamed "The Want-Ad Killer," is dead ... TMZ has learned.
Carignan, who used wanted ads to lure unsuspecting women so he could rape and murder them with a hammer, died earlier this month in a Minnesota prison ... with officials at MCF-Oak Park Heights telling us his death was from natural causes.
HC was serving a life sentence after being convicted in 1975 of murdering two women, Eileen Hunley and Katherine Schultz. During the trial, Carignan claimed God had ordered him "to kill whores and harlots" and pled insanity, but he was ultimately found guilty.

On July 31, 1949, Carignan killed 58-year-old Laura Showalter during an attempted rape in the Territory of Alaska. On September 16, 1949, he attempted to rape another woman, Christine Norton, and was arrested the next day. Carignan was convicted of first degree murder and assault with intent to commit rape. The jury did not recommend mercy, and he received a mandatory death sentence. However, Carignan won a new trial on his murder conviction in 1951 on the grounds that his confession had been improperly obtained. An officer interrogating Carignan had told him he wouldn't be executed if he confessed to the murder. Carignan's confession was suppressed and the murder charge was later dismissed. He continued to serve a 15-year sentence for assaulting Christine Norton. In 1952, he was transferred to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, before being paroled in 1960.

Convicted serial killer
Seems like the qualifications to be a serial killer are getting less and less. Only 2 people?
ETA: But they won't label the I-10 killings as the product of a serial killer.

Did he rape them with the hammer then beat them to death with it, or did he rape them the old fashioned way and then beat them to death with the hammer?
Article is unclear.

While convicted of only 3 murders, Carignan allegedly killed at least 5 women.

It would have cost the taxpayers much less to put a hole in this guy’s head well before he could quietly pass away as a 95 year old man in prison

He killed 3
If you read the entire article he killed 5. They had him locked up and he was paroled. While on parole he killed 3.

Sounds like the state persecuted him for simply practicing his religion

Some prisons have had to set up nursing home/hospice type facilities for old or frail prisoners, usually staffed by fellow inmates. That's part of the motivation for "compassionate release.". It shifts the expense of caring for them away from the prison.

Was this the guy in the movie played by John Cusack?

They need a program where once or twice a month on some random day, they put poison in one of the death row guy's food and execute him/her that way. Then, as long of the prisoner doesn't eat, they will never run the chance of being executed while on death row. Ecah time they take one of the guys out, they could get on the PA system and announce, "You know Prisoner number 57432? He should have skipped eating today. The Warden said 57432 had only been here for three weeks before he ran shite out of luck and you need to be careful out there, you could be next."

Not to be morbid, but I wonder the background of a 58 year old woman, who, in 1949, responds to a romantic want-ad. Divorcee, looking for company? Empty nester, whose husband died? Just seems like a sketchy encounter for an older, single woman to be in, especially for that time.

Agree. Drained the taxpayer for his dam whole life when he was guilty for murdering 2 people. Hang these guys after there is no doubt. These days with Dna test out there the chance of getting the wrong guy is almost gone. Start these public executions again for convicted murders especially and i can tell you the crime rates will start to drop.
