Try to help when I can. Has she graduated yet?
If she hasn’t then she needs to hit the career fair when the firms are all there and make contacts. I’d also suggest her trying to join the society of human resource management. I don’t know if the LSU branch allows non hr majors but if they do I would say join it. It would allow her to make personal relationships with hr people which help get you in the door.
Also if she hasn’t graduated she needs to start sitting front and center and making the teachers know her. They can be good resources for getting an interview

Unfortunately just graduated a couple weeks ago.

Then LinkedIn is her best bet. HR people, recruiters, partner and managers should all get messages from her. I think she can get a free trial of premium linkedin to help. The other way is go to the firms site and get emails that way. Generally once you have one company email you know the form to use to email any one.
Off limited information though tell her to look at the smaller firms.

I def wouldn’t inflate gpa like that on resume. Big 4 will probably ask for transcript. Also no one I know with less than a 3.5 got in with big 4 unless they had a family connection or came in through a diversity program, but good luck anyway
Posted on 6/2/18 at 10:53 pm to Parade Grounds
Yea that’s why she needs to try direct email route. It’s still highly unlikely to get in big 4 with that but it’s a shot.
The good news is accounting has so much that even small firms can pay well. Plus if she keeps in contact with them after getting experience then she might get in that way.

Tell your friend to save her time. She’ll just be dead weight. We really don’t need anymore new associates who will most likely play on their phone the whole time and have to have their hand held anyway.

Hmmm...... to quote a hiring manager I worked under when someone put a 3.5 on their resume which she considered subpar....... if you have an impressive GPA, include it. Otherwise, it will only make you look bad.
Needless to say, I’m damn glad she never knew my gpa because she would never have hired me.

The problem she has is being a new grad she won’t have much on her resume and the no gpa would be bad.
The smaller firms won’t be as turned off by a 3.0. She could also go industry to start.

Accounting and finance sounds miserable.

Friend is applying to big 4 accounting firms. Has a 2.95 on the LSU plus/minus, but a 3.225 on regular scale that all other schools mostly use. Can she attach supporting doc to her transcript and say yes to having over a 3.0? So far all have denied her because she doesn’t meet minimum of 3.0, yet she would have had LSU not changed standards.
LSU didn't retroactively change grades. Your friend got a 2.95 average AFTER old grades GPA was averaged with new scale GPA. "Your friend" earned below a 3.0 GPA.

I was a real man, and blamed Katrina for my shitty grades.

GPA does matter more for new grads....
But I’ve had it come up pretty rarely. Your friend should focus on her skills. Skills are everything and the ability to demonstrate you can learn new skills is what people look for in new grads. Theoretically, that’s what the gpa represents.
Same hiring manager said they don’t give a shite if the applicant has a degree, doesn’t have a degree, majored in engineering or womens’s studies, they need to demonstrate a capability of learning cutting edge technology and applying it to manage several billion dollars of securities. Not every firm has that full mindset but almost every place I interview with now, the first thing they ask is “ what systems and technology have you worked with.”
Ideally your friend will have gained some experience with hard skills in data analysis.
My situation now isn’t great because most of the jobs I am looking at require some level of CIS background which I have none of. It sucks.

Simply put... I wouldn’t put gpa unless I had to, especially with it being below a 3.0. Some managers won’t care, but some will. And the bigger firms and banks will use any excuse to not pass along a resume
Posted on 6/2/18 at 11:21 pm to athenslife101
I agree it’s about representing the ability to learn new skills in theory. They also use it as a initial filter, but she can try to go around that with reaching out to them instead of just using the apply here on the website.
Far too many new grads use the just apply here stuff on a site or hand a resume at a career fair and they don’t know to reach out after.
The other issue I think happens with accounting grads is too many don’t realize it’s really a sales pitch to get hired.

Rant On/
Share that cause I suck at that. Most positions I apply don’t give any information to actually reach out.
Right now, I’m going crazy right now due to some poor communication between some of the large firms. Literally crazy. One investment bank reached out two weeks ago requesting I set up time time to schedule an interview. I’ve tried calling them back several times and it goes straight to voicemail. Another bank I interviewed with 9 times, 2 months ago, and told me I scored high on the interviews. But refuse to tell me the next steps other than I’m still a top applicant “they like you, let us know if you have confictd.”
I bitch about it on here a lot but this job search is driving me crazy because right now it feels like I’m going to make a mistake and I duck at it..

LinkedIn is a huge resource. Upgrade to premium, use it to search the firm, find their top people, managers and such plus hr. You send them a detailed message once a week until they respond.
You can also try searching for their email through the company site, most will have someone’s email in their bio. Once you have one, you really should have them all. Most companys are first initial and then last name @ whatever company.

Yeah.
There’s one firm I’ve been interviewing with that has the most fricked up email system known. Luckily I have buddies who work there who can help me out.
They have initials, notnin order, followed by numbers.
So say your John Smith,
You could be JS35@
Or
It could be SJ57@
The only reason I’m bringing it up now is I’m drunk and it’s funny

Those can be annoying when they have a stupid email system.
If one strung me out that far I’d be pretty pissed. You could try this with them, contact them on Monday afternoon and tell them that a competitor has shown interest, but you would like them to get the first shot. They might speed up if they feel like they will lose you.
