Don't hire illegals and you have nothing to worry about
Most guys in this type of work have a rap sheet and are less reliable. FYI.
Most illegals being picked up currently also have issues with committing crimes including some being sex offenders.

Do the math. It's not the price of materials that make a roof 20-25 thousand dollars. There is margin in there....
When it comes to insurance scopes roofs have the highest margin of profit even with the higher premium on having it added to your workers comp

You mean nepotism? Still going strong for those river boat pilots. Would love to see that demographic and salary.

don’t think a lot of “citizens” want those jobs. Values have changed.
Nonsense. Citizens don’t want those jobs for the slave wages people have been paying illegals.

Guess I better get my roof repaired in a hurry….before the roofing company hires their new workforce of unionized Americans.

You have no idea how much of a margin there is on a roof job. Your rep at GAF doesn't either.
I wasn't talking to a rep, it was their CFO. One of my customers provides the bulk of their in-house financed capital. We're having to reconfigure that warehouses because they expect total EPC to go up significantly and the volume projections are going to be all over the place with price changes. Which is a big problem for them because of the LDs associated with us raising money for them and them not being able to deploy.

Even as a contractor I do not support illegals staying here out of fear wages might increase in certain trades once they are gone.
I also don't have any illegals working for me.
I couldn't even if I wanted to since my guys have to pass a background check since we work on HUD properties and we have to use an app to check in and confirm with HUD that only approved people are on site.

Youre not getting white people back into roofing, or concrete. Not going to happen.

At least with illegals the job gets finished and not 80% done.
Yep, Illegals usually do good work and are hungry, show up.
Crack head/meth heads arent showing up for work on their third day, and youre rehiring.

I am sure the CFO knows GAFs numbers inside and out. He is off saying there are small margins on a roofing job for an average contractor. The companies that only do roofing and get huge direct discounts from GAF, Tamko, etc have even bigger margins than a local everyday Joe.

It'll have to evolve, but thats going to mean higher prices. It's not just the additional labor expense, there's a bunch of other opex you get when you go from experienced but illegal workers to trying to staff up with US citizens. Higher wages, payroll taxes, insurance, training new people and the inevitable issues with the type of people who are willing to be roofers. It'll settle out, but it will probably suck for the consumer.
That's not saying it's a bad thing, just the reality of whats coming.
Eventually materials will get cheaper if construction demand goes down.

It’s just gonna cut into the Roofers margins

You don't want a white or black guy nailing shingles on your house.
I also don’t want sex offenders or other types of criminals working on my house just because they don’t run background checks on illegals or checked their identity documents.
It would also be nice if I didn’t have to try and locate the one person who speaks English and Spanish when I have a question or concern about something a worker is doing.
I would include not wanting to constantly hear the music while at home, but that would likely extend to blacks even more.

The illegal alien that showed up at a residence in South Lake Charles, raped and stabbed to death a 26 year old mother in front of her 4 year old stepson and then hauled his sorry arse back to Mexico must have one of those good working, hungry workers.

Maybe
Xactimate and the other cost estimators will all adjust with the market just like they do daily so if labor is more due to labor shortages then margins may stay the same. Insurance companies will push back and/or raise premiums more.
I am curious when insurance companies will push back at the standard overhead and profit (O&P) of 10% each being added to scopes. If a roofing job is $30,000, and the contractor is already profiting from that, than they don't need another 20% added to the scope IMO.
