Consequences of not having Wisdom Teeth removed

I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) taken out about 13 months ago. The upper 2 were "impacted", meaning they were perpendicular to my normal teeth. My doctor had told me the upper left "didn't want to come out." They ask you to come back a week after, but since a week was memorial day, they asked me to choose between Friday or Tuesday. I chose Friday. Around Wednesday I began to become nervous with the amount of swelling and called their office, but they said this was normal and to ice it. Friday, when I went in for my follow up, the receptionist immediately looked at it and told me it was infected. Eventually I was admitted to the hospital and spent 3 (maybe 4) nights there. Awful experience and there are certain differences in my mouth I still notice (doesn't effect anything).
What are the consequences of not having your wisdom teeth removed? This experienced caused me to wonder how necessary it is, or has it just become something we're so accustomed to we have it done to all young adults?
ETA:Got laid in the hospital bed with an IV in my arm so overall it may have been worth it

I'm sure it changes if they're "impacted" but I think it's likely another huge money grab for dentists.
I'm 31 and still have all of mine and no issues.

None if they are not impacted and you have adequate space for them.

Never had mine removed, no problems...

they could screw up the alignment of all your other teeth, especially if you already had braces.

Can cause over crowding.

In high school my dentist said it was urgent to get mine out. They scheduled me but i had a soccer tournament so i canceled. Never rescheduled.
20 years later my teeth look great, all 32 of them

I waited a long time to get mine out and I literally couldn't open my mouth to eat a sandwich due to them growing sideways and basically nailing my jaw closed. You have to get them out.

It will jack your teeth up if they're impacted and could require braces to fix. My teeth were 100% perfect and waiting to remove my wisdom teeth them for a shorter period of time shifted my K9s ever so slightly. If I had left them in, who knows how much my teeth would've shifted.

I only had one removed that came in. For whatever reason a small piece of my gums or whatever never fully separated from the tooth and covered part of it. Wasn't a problem, then it got sore like once a year, then sore all the time so had it removed.

It's an individual type of thing. Just depends on you. I kept all 4 of my wisdom teeth, and I've never had any problems with them. My dentist told me that I apparently have more space than average, and I don't have any problems with crowding.

Everyone's teeth are different. You have to be careful. A lot of Dentists will talk yo into surgeries you don't need to make $$. But if your wisdom teeth were impacted you most likely needed to have them removed. Were they hurting you before the surgery?

48. still have mine. Sometimes it's a touch difficult to get the brush back there, or to floss should something get caught between them and the last molar. Other than that, no other problems. I had teeth removed for braces as a teenager.
