There are a huge number of apartments and condos going up now, including a huge complex on 6th street. Between those and the developments along Nicholson, the footprint of downtown will be completely changed. What I'd really like to see is more infill downtown, more of those empty or surface parking lots turned into high-rises with parking garages.
The more people living AND working downtown, the fewer people driving to work downtown, the better for traffic on I-10.

This is being built by a developer who owns a lot of the downtown parking lots. Hopefully it won't be his last foray into getting rid of this surface lot crap.

There are so many restaurant/bar concepts I feel like I could "steal" from Nashville that would do well in Baton Rouge.
But I don't want the hassle of owning a restaurant/bar, especially in a city that lacks large supply of quality service industry workers.

The supply is there if you:
A. pay them more than minimum wage
B. don't drug test
C. have relatively flexible hours to accommodate for school or child-rearing.
D. train them
It requires a lot more hands-on-ness to be sure.

That means the supply isn't there to me
For instance, in Nashville, there has to be thousands of unemployed, college educated hipsters with Art History and Music degrees looking for jobs as a waiters. They make fantastic waiters

Would/do you live there?
My dad lives in Beauxregard Town (sp?) and has for 12 years. It is drastically improving every year. He owns a few properties that he rented out and their value has gone up and his renter "quality" has gone way up as well.
He's an attorney and works downtown so his commute is badass. Very jealous of it.

More money for Catfish Town, it's about to blow up and revitalize downtown...........

Catfish town failed for 2 reasons:
1. Timing
2. Stupidity
It just so happened to open up right before the 80's oil crunch absolutely devastated the state's economy and essentially shuttered all retail business downtown. Catfish Town was a lamb led to the slaughter. A good idea at a bad time will fail just as quickly as a bad idea.
Also, the city did two incredibly stupid things in managing it by not allowing alcohol to be sold and not really allowing concerts. By insisting it be a family friendly area, it didn't give downtown what it lacked at the time, a bar and restaurant scene.
Catfish Town, much like the St. Louis Union Station mall, are prime examples of how to fail with a good idea.
The fact that Catfish Town is now just an atrium for the lame river boat casino is a real shame. They could be doing so much more with that space.

The location of the airport is your issue? Think its fine where its located...i dont want planes flying over anywhere near where I live.
My issue with BR airport is how expensive flights are.

So much this! I can fly to Atlanta from MSY for $200 or BTR for $450. Gee, I wonder which one I'm going to pick!
It's a conveniently located airport that is a breeze to get into and out of, but the lack of direct flights and exorbitantly high ticket prices send me to MSY 80% of the time.

I'm scared of that coming here. I waited a lifetime for Red Robin from the commercials and never having one. Now I know and don't ever really wanna go there. It's one of those "don't meet your heroes" things for me.
