Comparing nCoronavirus numbers to the regular flu numbers is just idiotic

A lot of people seem to have this attitude about COVID-19: The common flu so far just in the US has hit 30M. Where is the panic over this number? There isn’t, because the flu is just a fact of life. We’ll get through this. Don’t panic. Get back to work.

But comparing nCov to the flu in that way makes no sense. Influenza is vastly more widespread for one thing, and the flu season has been going on for months longer than when nCov-19 burst on to the scene. You know what else doesn't kill as many people each years as the flu? Ebola. Ask yourself which one you'd prefer to be exposed to if you had to choose, influenza or ebola. By your logic it would be influenza because its killed more. But IF you get ebola its worse. The same appears to be true of nCov-19, the fatality rate is currently much higher. Now that is probably not the actual mortality rate, because we don't have a good idea on how widespread it is yet. But it would have to be VERY widespread to be as low as the flu.

Beyond that, we have decades of experience with treating influenza. We have vaccines that people can (and should) take each year for influenza. Sadly the world is imperfect and some people will get sick, and some people will die, but basing your analysis solely on the CURRENT death count makes no sense. By that logic we shouldn't respond to any disease until it reaches influenza levels. OR we could be proactive when presented with novel viruses and try to prevent unnecessary death and damage using reasonable efforts.

Its fine to discuss and debate what a reaonsable effort is, how long should we limit large gatherings, how soon will they start again, who should be tested first, etc. But those decisions and discussions should be based on actual facts from people who actually understand these types of situations. Not people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity who take numbers out of context and ignore the whole picture just to try and make a point.

nCov-19 is new, and there is ample reason to be concerned about it. Not panicked, but concerned. Until we know more and until there are better treatments and prevention methods (likely at least a year for the vaccine for example) then no, we should not treat this like the flu.

I don't know why you are doing the lower case n prefix thing, but it does make you seem smart!

Lost any credibility right here. Cause apparently your point isn’t really about the virus it’s about how you disagree with a couple of talk show hosts.

And I’m not really sure what picture you think they’re ignoring. Maybe you’re the one ignoring the big picture

It still hasn’t killed as many people as the flu. So maybe- just maybe- it’s not gonna be as bad here as it is in other countries. Maybe, for whatever reason, it won’t be the disaster here that everyone projected. Just like Ebola, SARS, swine flu, etc.

You're an idiot. Companies are working on vaccines and tests around the clock.
In one year "Corona virus" will be a memory in the dustbin of history, like SARS or some other previously forgotten "scare".

Doofuss who has been getting info from mass media and/or nutter videos on YouTube.

S. Korea's aggressive testing shows 0.6% morbidity rate, quite similar to flu.

Rush was comparing morbidity rates which is what has people all excited and concerned.

Swine Flu (which is the same strain as the "gold standard" Spanish Flu) went thud as a pandemic too.

Frickin Chicken Littles abound particularly among Millenials.

COVID-19 is fake news. It’s all a manufactured attempt to hurt GEOTUS.

The flu isn't just one virus. It's different strains. That's why getting the vaccine isn't a 100% safeguard to catching it. I'm not trying to start the 897966979th debate on here about whether or not one should get the flu shot. I'll just leave it at if I happen to be in the doctor's office and I can get a freebie being right there, I'll usually go ahead and get it because it can't hurt. But if you happen to get the flu (with or without the vaccine), it's pretty much the same thing as if you get coronavirus. All you can do is drink lots of fluids and let your body do its thing to pass the virus out.

People are freaking out about it as though it's nuclear fallout in the air. That's why a lot of us are criticizing how ridiculous that is.

Cancelling events and people walking around with surgical masks on is just a tad bit on the ridiculous side.

Some who deal with death and disease on a daily basis think more generally that death from pandemic viral infections is a fact of life, be they the flu, coronavirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza, etc.

Most everyone will get better from it.

Those that don't need medical care.

The medical care we will give is largely supportive (as in no medication that actually can kill/harm/slow the infection exists).

Those who are very sick probably won't survive a critical illness of any nature.

Those who are generally well can probably afford to get very sick. If they seem medical care, they'll likely do fine. Some will die. Some always die. Some are sicker than they know to begin with. Some just have bad luck.

These are all facts of Life that I have accepted. Nothing about a new virus changes it, other than I'll be sad and probably have an extra drink if I have a 30 year old die. But I pretty much already do that when one of my patients dies.

Well, part of that "one year" thing includes that antigenic shift/herd immunity concept more than what the drug companies will come up with.

The reason it's such a big deal, like the others, is that it is a brand new virus that's very different than anything that's ever existed before. If it's deadly enough, it won't have enough hosts to stick around for long (think Ebola). If it's spread easily with mild symptoms, it won't be nearly as novel to immune systems in a year. Or 6 weeks-to-months even.

I’ll worry about coronavirus when we know the rate of mild or asymptomatic infections.
