This is a good thing overall.
Of course like any shitty political deal in the state, bad companies get hired all of the time.
At least this time, someone was actually paying attention and expecting some kind of results.
I bet two years ago if this contract had been awarded, none of the buffoons in city hall would have even followed up to see that the scope was being executed properly.

Don't know if it was in the past three weeks, but after the flooding someone posted a picture on this site of ~10 guys + one vacuum truck working on one catch basin. Obviously that resulted in about 8 guys standing around with their thumbs up their asses. That kind of inefficiency screams government, but it may have been this company. Does anyone here remember/have the picture?

What changed over the past two years? I'm not being flip, I'm genuinely curious as to why you're saying that.

Is there any maintenance that could occur to prevent having to spend $7 million to clear them?

That isn't just government. The private sector is full of 6 layers of chiefs watching one Indian.

Nothing, which is why I agree with previous posters that think that it really may be a kickback issue. It's sad that ATTEMPTING to rectify incompetence is enough cause for celebration in NOLA.

I just think there is so much pressure on the drainage and pumps issue, etc that the loons running things have no choice but to pay attention to things.
Before the Sewage and Water Board fiasco, the public didn't care and the people in charge were just their normal lazy selves.

Yes, but I find that it's mostly private sector working on roads and other public bid projects. I spend a decent amount of time on commercial construction jobs and generally see all of the contract workers doing a decent to great job. They might do things incorrectly sometimes, but there's not a lot of farting around. The worst case I can think of was one GC overseeing one electrician for stretches at a time, but that was near the end of a project and there were other workers coming and going.

I remember when the Super Dome was being built, it was a was a bit of a joke with overruns, kick backs, and being behind schedule and whatnot

I'm just relaying what the spokesman for Mitch said. The logistics were straightened out after awarding the bid. That seems a bit backwards.

Agreed, but some of the info (like the # of trucks available) should be easily verifiable. Hopefully more comes out.

A lot of people. They hired the old public works director from Baton Rouge. Had to get the attorney general ruling to hire him. They also have a sister company in Kenner that has a lot of ties to the S&WB.

Just from the quoted parts of the article, it sounds like they couldn't even get near the amount of trucks that they were supposed to. That right there right from the start takes pretty much all doubt out of the discussion about if they were doing a good job or not.

Maybe, but it seems to me that someone would have been given the work if this were the case. Mitch could have made that happen with the quickness if he wanted with the award.

RAMJ is not a DBE. Although they are, and always have been (even before they changed names) politically connected. The vast majority of their connections have not been in NO. Jefferson, St. Charles, and St. John is where they have done the majority of their business.
The main problem is Public Bid Law. Low bid rarely is the best value. The second problem is crappy specifications. Whether it be from a municipality, or an engineer.
In this specific case, the low bidder is of the wrong ethnicity. Period. And I have no clue who the second bidder is in this case.
