And this
quote:
his sergeant “said there is no point in contacting him if he is not a harm to himself or anyone else.”
20 minutes later, the Clear Creek deputies breech the window.

seems like and odd assortment
Not if you are the joker.

Agree senseless killing but no chance I am putting a knife in my hand in that situation, however I wouldnt call 911 if I was stuck and id meet the cops outside of my truck anyway.

quote:Agreed, but if he was that worried about it, why didn't he toss them in the trunk before the cops got there?
Really? Seems like it’s a good idea to let them know that so the cops don’t show up and freak the frick out because they see a knife. This is a weird situation, but I don’t fault the dude for informing 911 of that.
quote:Same, not sure if there is a video. Hard to make a determination without knowing just how much of a threat he was. They say he grabbed a knife, did he? If so, was he close enough to any cop that they HAD to shoot him?
And I didn’t see the video in that link? Am missing it?
Lots of questions that are hard to answer without a video.

The problem could have been solved by leaving him some water and a snickers bar and walking away.
Once they got there, could see he was either impaired or not mentally sound, and then he admits to smoking something, I don't think they can walk away at that point.
They shouldn't have escalated, but it would have been irresponsible to walk away.

You know how everyone laughed when the Defund the Police stuff tried to get psychologists-social workers to respond? This is the stuff they're referencing. Dude was clearly a little off but no danger to anyone. The last thing he needed was LEO escalating a situation to fulfill their blood lust.
Also maybe, this dude seemed to be clear having some kind of mental issue/case and also had a couple of knives on him, so I wouldn't be so certain it would have ended well for unarmed social workers in this case either.

Nobody is saying they should just jump in the car with him.
If he's in the car, there is literally a 0.0 danger level for anyone.

This happened three months ago. It is now being reported by Colorado Public Radio. None of the officers were pulled out of service.
No national news. Nothing.
Why? Guy is white as rice.
So, when do we ride?

The problem is they have to get him out eventually. How long do you wait?

Sounds like he should have gotten out of the car with his hands up.
If you did nothing wrong the cops will apologize for over acting later on.

No they don't.
The mentality that they HAVE to do something is what caused the whole thing in the first place.
The Colorado State Trooper said they had zero reason to do anything with the guy. Let him sit there.
All the cops did was escalate nothing into a dead guy.

quote:Yep, not the best move on his part.
He clearly has a knife and takes a stab at the guy trying to open the rear driver side door.
I get that as a cop you don't want to just stand around all night, and I guess you eventually have to make a move, but if all he has is a knife, then you and everyone else is safe if you don't try to breach the car. but again, you can't do that forever, so I don't know what they should have done.
I know that kid fricked up royally though. You said you have knives, you alerted them to the fact, he should have done that. But they asked him to get out of the car to remove himself from those weapons, and he refused. He fricked up big time.
It does suck because it certainly seems like he was having a mental breakdown/issue. To SFP's point, I don't think you just send social workers and no cops to a scene like that, but maybe having, i don't know if it's a social worker, but someone trained in dealing with a person having a mental breakdown there along with the cops, you could get a better result. Again, I don't know how feasible that is though.

Weird story and I am sure there's more to it. If he was so concerned about a misunderstanding, why was he holding a knife 20 minutes into the "standoff?"
EDIT: Looks like the dude had known mental health problems. OP's article left this out. It sucks he was killed because of it, but Cops simply aren't trained for it.

wait, he is not even stuck and looks to be on a residential street, there are homes all over that county and all with dirt roads. The ground looks level and the car looks level.

I don't know what the correct answer. it's obviously true, he only has a knife, just give him space and no one is in imminent danger.
But yea, how long does that song and dance go on for?
