Why anybody would want to serve in the military of a third-world nation is beyond me. There is absolutely nothing to gain from it.

Trust me, if there was a place you wanted to visit in South America, other than sticking to the extremely touristy parts of Brazil, Colombia would be your best bet as an American.

The definition of the phrase is irrelevant if the poster who first used it was in fact using it in a negative connotation in an attempt to imply that Colombia is not a developed country rather than using it as it was intended to be used.

Americans are notorious for using "first world" or "third world" when what they really mean is a developed, developing, or lesser developed country. Almost none use the terminology in it's correct context, wanna know why? Cold wars been over for 20+ years...

In any case, it is 100% understandable for "third worlders" to join their nations military. Colombia's military is basically subsidized by the U.S. It's a steady job and you are backed by the government. Makes complete sense.

So he's wrong on both fronts.

Based on that video and the one after it, Colombia has the second most land mines in the world, right behind Afghanistan. Nothing screams "cosmopolitan" quite like massive amounts of land mines killing your population. Does your GF still have both of her legs?
