How does this work? Can’t a kid just take up residence in that state? Would be worth whatever trouble it was. OOS fees are like another mortgage

There's usually a waiting period like 12 months once residence is established and I believe there may be some sort of financial independence test as well. Don't quote me on the second part, I just know some people that tried to do it and remember something about that.

I think in Louisiana the waiting period is just one year... BUT... you can’t be enrolled in school during that year.

Also, if you leave Louisiana, you have five years to return to be considered a resident.

You had ~18 yrs to save for day, it's also a good time to tell them they'll be going to school in state, if they want you to pay for it.

To be fair, average tutition costs have doubled since that kid was born and most of that increase coming in the past 8-10 years. A lot harder to save for something for 18 years when they change the cost drastically halfway into it

Out of state costs are out of control. Turns out to be similar to private schools.

And yes the schools know the tricks people try to play to be “in state.”

Taxes go to support the state school. Unless you are going to UNC, UVA, UT, Berkeley, and that quality of school, paying out of state tuition is stupid. The folks in LA paying for oos tuition at Ole Miss are stupid.

I swear we had this exact thread yesterday.

Answer is you must establish residency (usually 12 months) while NOT being enrolled at all at the desired school.

Many states (okay AZ and maybe others) allow you to take community college classes while establishing residency.

If your kid has a strong desire for a specific school and doesn't have a big ego, then spend the first year taking a few CC classes and working part time to get in state.

Start the state school on year 2, or even year 3 if they want to save more money.

My bad, you should start binge watching Anthony O'Neal videos now.
He'll teach you the right things to do.

This should be the go to strategy for any average student that wants to go to college.

I saved about 15k over 2 years because I went to BR college of champions before LSU. Not to mention that anyone with a pulse can get honor roll there.

A lot of time, the problem is kids getting accepted into a graduate(Pharmacy, Dental, PA, LAW, etc) program out of state.

There's not much of an option but be ready to dig deep into your pockets and pay. Or better yet, super absorbent amounts of school loans.
