ESPN
A company called Vintage Breaks, which offers collectors a chance to buy spots in unopened vintage card packs, charged $500 for spots in a pack of 1955 Bowman.
On a stage, wired up to the crowd, owner Leighton Sheldon screamed when he saw the second-to-last card in the pack.
"My eyes bulged out of my head," Sheldon said.
What Sheldon saw was the most valuable card in the set: a Mickey Mantle, which appeared to be in pristine condition.

So they are selling each spot for each card in the deck for $500/?
And he knew ahead of time that he was getting whichever card was in the #2 spot?

Should have given them a good firm shuffle first to make it fair.

It's bananas to me that these packs of cards remained unopened even after the baseball collector craze of the late 80's and early 90's. They must be finding these things in dead peoples' attics and storage units.

That's how I understood it, though the writing on that article is atrocious.

You're buying a spot for one pack. Or multiple packs if you want to buy multiple spots.
So if there's 20 packs in a box and you buy pack #5, when it's time to open up the 5th pack, everything in it is yours.
Newer breaks you typically buy a certain team. If you buy the Yankees, you get all the cards of yankee players pulled in the box.

Yep.
The 1986 find was the GOAT by far.
Unopened case of 1952 Topps found in a truck drivers attic. About 50 of the Micky Mantle rookie cards were in those boxes.
3 Gem mint 10 1952 Mantles were pulled from that case.
The most expensive baseball card ever sold was a Honus Wagner for $3.12M in 2016.
Those 3 gem mint Mantles pulled from the case in that guys attic (along with 5,500 other 1952 topps) are estimated to be worth over $10 million. Each.
For just 1 card, $10M should any of the 3 current owners decide to make one of them available. The majority of all 1952 topps baseball cards graded as gem mint 10 came from that single box in ole baws attic.
