We had a guy that would show up in the morning and you would not see him until the end of the day.

In the field he would hitch a ride out and then somehow show up right before we left the field showered and clean shaven.

Pre Gulf War the Army was a cake walk.
Only thing my CO cared about was sending people to Airborne School. He would sit back and talk about Airborne stories. Huge waste of time if you unit has nothing to do with infantry. Hey, they sent volunteers called “suckers” like me.

Never be the first to volunteer or last. Be in the middle group. This way you get out of stuff.

The Seabees IPO program was a two years gig for those who qualified. I was in the Seabees but went through the four year Navy route. Out of boot camp they sent us to the (Navy) trade scools...my case heavy equipment... to learn the basic stuff.
To say there was resentment from us regular enlistees toward the IPO's is a gross misstatement. There nay have been some good natured joking but nothing serious. I left as a E-5 after 4 years.
Don't worry about the advanced rank you may be eligible for. Yes stall humble and be a team player...good advise for all.

Old days it was by slot, depends on unit, MOS, and openings for NCO positions. My regular army unit was easy as they were trying to get rid of Vietnam era guys. We had a lot of slots open. I got in it at the right time.

Rank sometimes will go by the slots open in your unit.

If you want the brass positions you probably have to go back to OCS type school.

Don’t see how you could do it with your job honestly. You’ll miss at least a long weekend a month if not more.

I have a friend that does Navy Reserves but he works for the government so they don’t give a damn really.

I’m assuming the Coast Guard you wouldn’t have to deploy really, but I’m assuming they could send you to remote places if needed?

I’d be very very leery of how often they would need you but I don’t see how you wouldn’t miss one long weekend a month.

After I got out of the Army, I joined the Coast Guard, and got stationed in Morgan City. I guessing your joining the Reserve Force Readiness System (RFRS) I enjoyed my time with the Coast Guard and Basic Training was a breeze compared to Army Basic. If you go to Cape May, it's beautiful and right off the atlantic coast.

Unlike the Army, Coast Guard basic is mostly classroom training which is very boring unless they've changed things.

Coast guard reserves
Looking into doing the coast guard reserves next summer into what is called the “depot” program. I currently have a full time/career job but would like to serve in some capacity. Basic is 3 weeks for this. Has anyone done this before or have any solid info on it? Meeting with the recruiter next week.

An ugly side of Gulf Coast CG service is that many of their calls are body recovery calls.

People jump off bridges and the CG fishes them out. It isn't all just trolling bywaters, stopping bikini clad cigarette boats

As in anything having to do with the military read the dotted line.

Recruiters will feed you any line of BS to get you in the service. They are like salesman for Fast Freddy’s Used Cars.

Line they fed me in 80’s.
- hot chicks
Nope mostly fat chicks riding around in Ford Escorts. When they would get out the Escort would lift up. Truth

- Hot chicks in Germany
Nope nada most were married to brass False...Flashing an American smile is a German OT9 panty dropper

- Hit chicks Guatemala or Honduras
You know this answer right off the bat

- Best one you get to see the world.
Just did not tell me about building roads in a mud pit where it rained everyday in Belize or sitting in mountains waiting for Rebels. My time in the Navy I visited Portugal, Spain, Bahamas, England, Bahrain, UAE, and Israel

- Basic only 8 weeks they also did not add graduation week and reception station time. Truth, you time at BASIC will be around 10 weeks

- You get all this free stuff. Your first check goes toward uniforms, haircut, running shoes, etc. Army will always get it back. Your first check will be shocking light

- PS again around the base if a girl invites you to a hotel she has buddies ready at the hotel to beat your butt in and take your money. The DI’s tell you this and it is true. We had to fight these pricks as they beat up on my battle buddy and I loved to fight back then. That's awesome! I had a coed division and simply hooked up with a female classmate

Sat night live Navy commercial spoof 1980’s

I'm incredibly thankful to have served but you definitely have to deal with a lot of BS

True.

I’m an ex-Coastie, we do some bad arse stuff that most have no idea about. I spent 9 months living in a tent in a war zone during the 2nd Iraq war.

What's the age limit on signing up for the thing you're interested in?

Have any of you guys every been in the PX and trying to pickup on a hot chick. Her boyfriend comes up who was a mountain of a man, so you change the subject talking about how good looking her mountain of a big A$$ girlfriend is. At least it was blonde.

Then said dummy, which was me asked big blank girlfriend out if I saw her around. Excuse to get out of there.
Dummy’s buddy and other friends actually on purpose told her hot looking friend which company we were in.

Big A$$ monster of a woman man bear elephant pig found our barracks we were staying temporarily. Walked pass my buddy who was at the door pushing him aside like a little boy, picked me up like a rag doll, and I think she took me out. Then she had all her hot friends go out with my buddies on double or triple dates. Her hot friends would not mess with me as woman bear pig mountain of a big thing told them I was her fiancé.

Yes, I was made fun of by the older guys while they benefited from my sacrifice.

Oh, yeah Germany sucked big big big big time for this guy!!!!!!

I volunteered to go to Honduras as a military advisor ASAP!

Saschquatch was on me like elephant on a poor rat and everything good about Germany was squashed away.

Yes, the country fun if you avoid the blonde Sasquatch.

A few guys that got out after me joined the California Guard unit I was in. They told me when the walls came down it was serious partying better than when I was there.
