I helped provide some of the education to the A-10 Thunderbolt pilots when they were at England AFB. I'll take those any day of the week over some of the other fighter aircraft. They are excellent in plowing the road before ground forces come in. Until the come up with something that is vastly superior and significantly more effective for the type of campaign that A-10s were meant for, they need to keep the A-10s humming and gunning.

I've yet to meet someone with experience with this aircraft or operations involving this aircraft that can find a reason to retire it. One thing that gets mentioned a lot is the psychological effect this aircraft has. The enemy knows if they here this they are dead.

The AF may not lose any capability, but the guys on the ground sure do.
Maybe the army and marines should just be better at their jobs and not rely so much on the Air Force...
When's the last time you were in the field and took fire from an enemy aircraft...?

The GAU-8 just pulverizes and splatters the target. It has such a physiological effect on the enemy. Unless engaged in suicide fighting, it'll send them into hiding, or turn them hoofing in all directions.
Another thing is the Warthog can handle small arms fire and stay on line. You can talk speed but having to repair damage on an F-35 just isn't practical or cheap.

My father was a Flying Tiger at England.
Very unique aircraft.
I have a few blank rounds from the cannon. Would only take one to ruin your day.

They had a bombing range next to my property in Sabine parish when they flew out of England afb Miss that so much. Was so much fun to watch the sky light up on the night time practice

They used to fly down to Ft. Leonard Wood in MO from Whietman (trigger) Air Force base in KC to do bombing runs, I sat out the deck and watched them for a long time and loved it.

Also, if you haven't watched it yet, here a link to Sen. John McCain addressing Air Force Chief Welsh on the issue of retiring the A-10 in an Armed Service Committee meeting.

To answer your question "Never".
Do you not believe that the successes we have had is due to a joint effort between all parts of the services, sea, land and air?
There is no doubt aerial domination plays a big part in the success of ground troops, but would you not say the same is true vise-versa?

If the AF scraps the A-10 then I pray that the USMC or Army takes it over
If the USMC or Army were that serious they should allow the AF to get a bigger slice of the Defense budget in order to fund it. Since they won't, the AF is stuck with the decision on whether it puts funds towards its primary mission (gaining and maintaining Air Superiority) or it puts funds to support missions.
The F-35 was never intended to replace the A-10 platform for platform. The A-10 is simply the MDS we have to divest in order to pay for the F-35 and to also free up the personnel billets for pilots and maintainers.
Also, the A-10 has structural issues that are only going to compound in the next 10 years.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Heard Chad Hennings say the A-10 was the only "fighter" plane with enough room for his 6'6" body.

Per a good friend of mine who is a retired officer who flew A 10s in Desert Storm, there was talk of turning the A 10 fleet over to the Army for CAS, but that never happened.
The A 10 is a bad mother and has performed its missions superbly.

I saw an interview with a Taliban commander. He said the things we fear the most are the A10 and the AC130 gunship. Case closed
