Those newer ac can cover that mission about like I can cover LF7 out of the flat.

Your analogy falls flat because the AF isn't looking to replace the A-10 in the CAS mission 1v1. It is a system of systems approach. In that light, to carry your analogy forward the AF intends to cover "LF7" with 5 defenders:

2 LBs: B-1 and B-52
3 DBs: F-15E, F-16, and F-35

And for good measure you can throw in the MQ-9s and the Navy/USMC contribution of F-18s.

CCA was the #1 cause of CIVCAS over there.

Yeah and I'm sure you AF guys took them 100% at their word right? Yeah I'm sure the 20 people HQN wheeled out around Abad I shot were "innocent civilians" like the AF investigating officer found when Karzai pressured him into it. I'm sure they were completely innocent and I'm sure they didn't just shoot a CIA dude through the head minutes prior.

Are you saying the Army doesn't operate C-130s? Because they absolutely do.

You and I both know some of those reports are BS and that there's often more to the story but that isn't just the AF sticking it to the Army. Hell, one of the largest single CIVCAS events in 2010 was when a B-1 dropped a shite-ton of JDAMs on what the Afghans later claimed was a "friendly supply column of trucks coming out of Pakistan." This even though we had ISR on it the whole time and knew it originated from a known Taliban support site in Pakistan.

Point is that if you are going to remove the BS reports for CCA, you have to also remove them for CAS, thus relatively being a neutral position.

What unit were you in/command under? I have served under MG Lyons too. I'm a civilian now so I can say I'm not a fan.

Yes, I'm saying that. I'd like to hear more though.

Just when I thought I've seen every type of C-130. Maybe I'll get to see that fairly secret Army C-130.

Been Soldiering since 1981. Never heard of an Army C-130. Guess I am 'bout to get some learning.

I was in the ACCE (later renamed/re-org'd into the 9th AETF-A) and MG Lyon was the ACCE Director. This was right before he was the ACC/A3. Yes, he was a pain in the arse to work for, but the guy knew his airpower and the way to properly employ it.

OK, you were right and I screwed up...what I was thinking of was the C-123 that the National Guard does use. The Marines and the Navy have a few C-130s. My apologies for the mistake.

I guess the few other fixed wing aircraft that the Army flies includes the RC-12 Guardrail. Point is still the same that they do not fly fixed wing "strike" aircraft.

Absolutely. No fixed wing "strike" capability that I am aware of.

Hey, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. But it would have had to have been for some ECM/MI/spooky stuff.

Pretty sure we also do the CASA 212 and the C-27J (only because I am a paratrooper).

It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong and it takes a bigger man to point and laugh at him. (or geographically separated smaller man works too)

I have flown 23 different flavors of C-130s, I was going to mad if someone was hiding a variant that I didn't know about.

but I would take the A-10 everywhere else. Granted I have only had the A-10 for CAS in the desert of Iraq and the mountains in Afghanistan (RC-East) so I have not witnessed their performance in a heavily wooded area.

No the AF Brass is looking to buy new shinier objects (with impressive junkets attached) while justifying sun setting the best platform for the job of CAS at the same time.

You can combine whatever you want including Santa Clause they still won't have the durability, armament, maneuverability, lift for slow approaches, and ability to stay on station like the hog does.

Add to those factors the psychological advantage the hog brings to the table and the brass are screwing the pooch. That is whey the date keeps getting pushed back.
