Is deconning tools and clothes after clean-up necessary? Helping out in some homes that took on a lot of water and just wondering if we should be cleaning tools or clothes in any special way. Sorry if this was mentioned in any other thread that I may have missed. Seemed everything was directed at homes or damaged items, and not necessarily anything used in clean up.

I haven't been wearing anything special. Just old clothes and steel toe boots and gloves. Occasionally I see people wearing a mask.

I'm just tossing the clothes I wear each day away.

Yes. We dealt with this after Katrina. People wandering back into our barracks in boots they had been walking around in filth all day. We put bins of bleach water outside to wash boots and tools. Clothes can go in the washer by themselves on hot cycle. There are anti microbial detergents if you get especially contaminated. Good question actually.

Hate to think of someone with a floor crawling toddler coming home in boots with who knows what on them.

For Katrina and also this past we took a plastic bin and filled it half way with water. Pour about a cup of bleach in it and dip the tools. Scrub with a brush and wash off with a hose.
It's a little time consuming but saves the tools from rusting and being nasty.

I you need to ask this level of question, you shouldn't be using inside lingo like "deconning".

I spent 3 years working in environmental consulting. But, see, we didn't deal with things like mold and shite, and we typically weren't walking around in regular shoes and clothes either.

Also, I had my ideas, but wanted to see what others have been doing. Everything said has confirmed what I thought would be appropriate.

Either way, how is an abbreviated form of "decontamination" "inside lingo"?

It's not like i said mob/demob.

At this point, it's mostly still dirt and mud.

I wouldn't think non-porous surfaces, like tools, would be all susceptible to mold.

Wouldnt hurt to sanitize the tools. As someone who works in a hospital you encounter all sorts of things you don't want to bring home to your kids, Especially if they happen to be crawling. I would recommend changing your clothes outside if possible and by all means don't bring your shoes inside. I would highly recommend a mask to anyone doing demo. The amount of respiratory and weird fungal illnesses in the next few months is going to interesting.
