I'm making two assumptions here:
1) They are fighting with the side they are on, not in place of the entire army.
2) They would obviously be fighting for the side that lost the war originally. What's the point of discussing their effect on the outcome if you added them to the side that already won, dumbass?
I picture Jack Nicholson in full Marine uniform sitting on a stand yelling your posts at me.
Good points though.

Vader,
Have you read any of the Eric Flint stuff? The 1632 series has so many offshoots and contributions from other writers, you can spend a year or two reading it. Not only does it have some cool battle scenarios, but it also leads to the introduction of American-style politics into that era. He also had a great book and sequel on the War of 1812.

I've not seen it but I'll check it out. Thanks!

Yeah, just assault rifles, machine guns and give them snipers too. No explosives, helicopters, bombs or anything like that.
I don't think they could at all. The #s they would be facing are far too great.

Way too many variables. Without clearing them up and having a better idea of like "Location" "Knowledge" stuff like that.... This thread could be fun though

No they would not win.

what about just like 3 tanks

it's funny that this thread was brought up... we had a tac ops. class at our NSWPS (naval special warfare prep school) and we spent A LOT of time discussing the strategies used by the civil war generals and commanders... they were actually very ahead of their times... I don't think they'd have a chance against 100 of us but if we are talking about going through the WHOLE WAR, then that's a little different
also, we (seals) would never be issued AKs
EVER

Not even close. The other side would isolate them as best they could, and go about its business on the other 99.999% of the land area of North America.
There is an interesting thread on an alt.history website about a Marine Expeditionary Unit time traveling back to the Roman Empire.

I thought it was a no-no to write seals in lower case
